Now here's the fun part. From the same issue of Chain Store Age (July 1961) as the geodesic Marin-area store, comes this gem (on the very next page, as a matter of fact, page E31): artist's depictions of the store before it opened.
Notable features include the Circle S on the small stone area where a Square S would later until the front refacing, and the usage of the 1960s-1970s Safeway lettering (which was probably taken down in the 1980s for the rectangular lighted sign) on the front.
