A store that small operating in 1972? I think that's a sign as to why A&P is clinging to life.

A&P still operated smaller, urban stores into the 70's. Remember the sales per square unit were considerable, so they kept them in operation, just like the French Quarter A&P which survived Katrina, continues to do.
