On January 14 2026, Northgate Gonzalez will celebrate the grand opening of their newest store in La Mirada. The space was first built as a Vons in the late 1960's. This location was originally planned for a November 2025 grand opening but it was delayed due to recent storms and a few other minor issues during the renovation. This new location means a lot to the founding Gonzalez family as some of the family members grew up in La Mirada.

Well it might be good news to the community, but it's bad news to me. This building was well preserved before Northgate Gonzalez moved in. But then they did away with the wavy awning, and gutted out the original ceiling with pyramid-shaped ceiling tiles: a distinctive feature of late 1960s Vons;

The exterior facade was well preserved when it was both Bestway and Superior Grocers. Northgate lately has been renovating their stores that have older exteriors. Last year they re-did the exterior of the La Puente store, which used to be a Kroger Market Basket/Fiesta Foods Warehouse. And they do renovate the store buildings inside out to better suit their new attractive interior decor package as well as the obvious - to modernize the building including bringing it up to current code.
