Here’s a vintage photo (in living color!) of the 12,764-square-foot Safeway once located in San Mateo’s Shoreview subdivision. When Safeway closed up in the 1970s, it became Big T. By the early 1980s, it was bannered All American. That closed for good in January 1988, and the building remained abandoned until being demolished for townhouses in 2000. Note that this store was a TWIN of the late Safeway at 735 7th Ave in San Francisco! Both opened in 1959: the San Mateo one in January, and the latter in July. The San Mateo location was the first supermarket building that fascinated me as a kid, but I never got to see it when it was open. So I was ecstatic when I came across its twin in 1999, then still operating as Safeway!
