The Safeway at 3071 Stevens Creek Blvd. in Santa Clara opened January 1957, adjacent to The Emporium (now Macy's men's store). It was Emporium's stated policy to have a supermarket adjacent to their stores. The Safeway was the second largest in northern california, behind the Market st. store in San Francisco. Ten "high-speed" checkstands were used in the 21,850 sq. ft. store. At some point, a garden center was added to (the east side of?) the store. The Safeway expanded a little on the east side, I'm guessing in the 1960s, maybe in the former garden center space? The third Safeway Super S (after Anchorage, AK and Berkeley) at 3081 Stevens Creek Blvd. (now Long's) of 20,000 sq. ft. was built adjacent to the Safeway on the west side, opening in November 1963.
