It's finally happened, after three years of proposals.

The Safeway at Seventh Avenue and Cabrillo Street is set to close Jan. 7 at 10 p.m. A relatively small store compared to others in the chain, the store, built in 1959, will be rebuilt as a state-of-the-art facility before it reopens next October.

The current Safeway store will be torn down and rebuilt in Safeway’s new “lifestyle format” that includes warmer paint colors and less harsh lighting, changes meant to make the shopping experience less like going to a doctor’s office, said Jennifer Webber, a Safeway spokeswoman.

Customers will also be able to order groceries through a temporary site at Seventh and Cabrillo during the closure.

I dunno but it looks to me like the "big ugly guy" is in a lot better shape than the Safeway...

My betrothed was taking pictures of me that day for a newspaper feature. I don't always wear that shirt :)

A quick addendum: When I went to the store (for what seems like the final time) on December 28th, I noticed several posted municipal notices referring to a September 2, 2003 meeting on the fate of the site, and the new store. (This was clearly planned pre-Lifestyle.) It noted that the new building would be 28K square feet, which would be more than double that of the marina.

What I am wondering is how they'll deal with the house on the northwest corner of the building, the one that created the unusual "L" shape of the supermarket. Will that asymmetrical back area become the location for our parking ramps?

As I noted in an email to the Western Stores and Gas mailing list, I really hope someone can get day shots of the circle S signs on the loading bays at 8th Avenue; I only was able to get night time shots on my last visit:
