New Uses for Grocery Stores

Former Kroger building, now a Toyota Dealership
Here is a link to a former Kroger store what has been renovated into "The world's largest Toyota Dealership". On the link to the dealership, the picture on the front of it is the former store. The white section which says Toyota used to be the "greenhouse" area of the Kroger. This Kroger store was opened around 1987, and was one of the very first store to be an enlarged supermarket in the Cincinnati area. The front of it touted the "Store of the 90's" sign in a script out front, later changed to "Future Store" and later removed completely.
I've also included a Google Maps link which has the store when it was a Kroger...

Here is a link to the Worlds Largest Toyota Dealer. It used to be a MALL. It was anchored by Sears, but had a large Smiths Food King on the east end of the mall, in the corner where the Starbucks is now located.epickles wrote:Here is a link to a former Kroger store what has been renovated into "The world's largest Toyota Dealership". BTW, all the new cars not in the lot are in that parking structure.

For those curious, it's Penske-owned Longo Toyota in Los Angeles.Jeff wrote:Here is a link to the Worlds Largest Toyota Dealer. It used to be a MALL. It was anchored by Sears, but had a large Smiths Food King on the east end of the mall, in the corner where the Starbucks is now located.

3,000 cars in stock. That's just INSANE.
I just want to tour the facility.
(Sorry for moving off topic, but I'm just blown away by this place.)

Here's a 1962 marina Safeway in Clearlake, I think in California (that's the only Clearlake I can think of), now being converted into a city hall.

Note the uneven sizing of the marina wings:

More former Safeways...one in Washington, DC, a gable that is now a church:

And a marina in Larkspur, CA that is now medical offices.

1964 marina Safeway in Red Bluff, CA now serving as the Tehama County Library...

Per a search of the Tehama County Library website, the blueprints for that store (at Oak and Madison) are available there. Prototype looks very much like the Kelso, WA store, or the current Tognotti's in Sacramento.
This is mentioned on DCGrocery, the 4975 Columbia Pike location in Arlington...a marina converted to the "Arlington Mill School":

There were two Giant Open Air locations in Richmond in the 1970's (Giant Open Air was a Norfolk-based chain later acquired by Farm Fresh). Both stores were pretty large (like cloes to 100,000 sf); the one in the West End became the vehicle maintenance garage for Thalhimers department stores and is now an indoor baseball training facility. The one on Midlothian Turnpike became a Nissan dealership and is now a large meeting hall for the Jehovah's Witnesses.

I've posted photos of that church before, it's an ex-Safeway in the marina style at 3030 Del Rosa:Dean wrote:In San Bernardino CA...there are two (2) former SAFEWAY locations that are used for other purposes. One (1), off Highland Avenue is a surgery center. The other is a church (near Arden area).

Another marina church can be found in Inglewood at 8469 Crenshaw.

I'm curious if you can get any shots of that spot, since I've only seen it in overhead photos on Live Local...Dean wrote:Yes, that is the site. The center is currently pretty run down.TheStranger wrote: Is that the one in the community of Bloomington? That's at Valley and Linden...
That reminds me, the marina Safeway in Daly City that was demolished in 2001, that was a furniture store for a while after having been a liquor place (I THINK it was an Ernie's Liquors).

In Fresno:
A furniture store is at a former Vons on Shaw & Marks
DD's Discounts at a former Vons on Kings Canyon & Clovis
DD's Discounts at a former Save Mart on First & McKinley
Rite-Aid at a former Save Mart on Palm & Bullard
Marshalls at a former Safeway on Shaw & Clovis
Lately Fiesta Foods has opened up at a former Vons on First & Tulare and Vallarta has opened at former Save Mart on Chestnut & Butler and is planning another store at a former Vons on Cedar & Dakota.
Even hispanic food stores are taking space in former grocery stores in Fresno not to get too far off.
