The Cedar Mill store "expansion" was in fact an almost complete demolition of the original store and new construction. There are a possible one or two walls of the building that are remaining from the original store (those would be at the northwest rear exterior corner of the store, basically), and that's it.

The original store had a flat roof. It was not a Marina design.

Finally found a recent view of the Lakeview marina that shows both the Circle S cowboy sign, and the front of the store as it is now (lacking the Circle S plate on the front lettering area, originally placed on the noticeable white square to the left of the S in SAFEWAY and seen on the Lakeview photo in the Groceteria 1960s Safeway collection).

Here's a recently remodeled (but still very much in shape) marina in the suburb of Lake Oswego, on 401 A Avenue - notice the new windows!

I have been inside the Lake Oswego safeway pictured. If I am not mistaken, it was one of the first lifestyle remodels in the Portland area, before they updated the logo, and possibly the only one on a marina Safeway. It did have lighting very similar to what the lifestyle remodels have been installing recently.

Is the classic marina ceiling still fully exposed at that store? In a few months, I'll be checking up the Mission/30th marina in San Francisco (currently mid-remodeling) to see if they've retained the marina ceiling.

Judging from the photo, the open high windows on the storefront suggest they have retained the ceiling line inside...

The photo of 4515 SE Woodstock Blvd: This began life as Dieringer's Super Center in 1965 (Safeway was originally at 4315 SE Woodstock Blvd). The 4515 block then became Disco Mart until late 1979, and then it was Thriftway from that point until 1993. It then became an IGA from 1993 to 1995. Safeway had closed down its Marina building (the 4315 block) in 1996 and moved into the 4515 block. Bi-Mart now resides at the 4315 block.

The photo of 101 SE 82nd Ave: I remember seeing this store at one time circa 1988, with the 1982 Safeway red/orange banner in the center of the store (see glass arch area) where the red bubble lighted SAFEWAY letters originally were, but still had the mosaic medallion entrance markers intact.

The photo of 401 A Ave in Lake Oswego: This location opened in February 1965. Does anyone have pictures of this store the way it was back in '65?

The photo of 5920 NE MLK Blvd: This location also opened circa 1965. Does anyone have photos of this location as a Marina prototype (pre-1989)?

The photo of 2800 SE Hawthorne Blvd: This location opened about 1964. Does anyone have any pre-1980s photos of this location?

The photo of 4515 SE Woodstock Blvd: This began life as Dieringer's Super Center in 1965 (Safeway was originally at 4315 SE Woodstock Blvd). And, regarding the photo of the Milwaukie Safeway that had been demolished a few years ago, that one initially opened during the Pylon era (in May 1951!). It was upgraded to a Marina Prototype during 1967 (has the arched roof, not gable).

I remember going there when it was a Marina Prototype. The location was 10554 SE Main Street in Milwaukie.

Ah, relief: a marina without a false front, at 10432 SE Kent Kangley Rd in Kent - now operating as a Dollar Tree. According to this page - http://www.yelp.com/reviews/7_Seattle_WA/page_4060.html - the Safeway moved out a few years ago.


And much better news: remember the Eastgate marina mentioned in the very first post of this thread? Here's some shots of the store being worked on; the interior was completely gutted apparently, but the marina roof (plus ceiling!) and front will remain as is, to quote the contractor involved in the project:

Nonstructural exterior facelift

This store is located at 3080 148th Avenue SE (at SE Eastgate Way) just off of Interstate 90 in the Eastgate district of Bellevue, WA. This overhead shot apparently predates the photos of the store I put up in the first post of the thread, which were taken when the new sign tower was already installed.

Judging from the extensiveness of this remodel, this probably was one of the first marinas to get a remodel without hiding the classic facade, hopefully the start of a newer trend (as I think is occurring in SF's Inner Mission store).

That 148th Avenue store in Bellevue doesn't show up on the store locator, but does show up on some google results.

However, it had already been specifically mentioned in Bellevue's municipal fire code:

Beginning at a point 17 feet west and 45.5 feet north of the northwest corner of the main structure; thence south 12 feet; thence east parallel with the existing concrete retaining wall 246 feet; thence north 12 feet to said retaining wall; thence west along said retaining wall to the point of beginning.

(The Fisher Drug building looks to be also gutted as part of this renovation process.)

On the other hand, the other Bellevue marina Safeway is still endangered:

The downtown Bellevue Safeway is moving one block south, to a larger lot and a modern shopping-apartment complex to be built by AvalonBay of Washington, D.C. The current Safeway site will be developed into a shopping-office complex.

This store did retain the original ceiling, but was repainted in a similar color to what other lifestyle remodels have been getting. The lights actually hang down from the ceiling and are all at an even level across the store. I personally thought the remodel on this store was nicely done.

Somewhere in Portland, I am not sure where, there used to be a Safeway which had a hidden marina front, and inside, a suspended ceiling. There were areas though that the marina roof beams actually dipped below the level of the ceiling. Again, I do not remember the exact location, and it could be closed for all I know.

I thought I would throw Eugene/Springfield, OR Safeways into the mix. If anyone can find images of these with Live Local, that would be great.

-849 W. 6th Ave. Opened July 11, 1951. Interesting pylon/marina hybrid. Originally, this store had a streetfront entrance, and aisles parallel to the length of the store. In the 1960s, a small Marina addition was added to the left side, facing the parking lot, which would then become the front of the store. At the same time, the original 1950s ceiling remained in the rest of the store. The former front entrance was sealed off at this time as well. The checkstands were moved to the addition, and the aisles were re-oriented to be perpendicular to the length of the store. This seems to have been common procedure during renovations of 1950s Safeways in the 1960s and 1970s, but this is the only example of a marina addition on a pylon store that I know of. There is still a small pylon (no longer with a sign), but I wonder if this pylon wasn't taller originally. This store is in a neighborhood that has seen better days, and is a success story. Safeway pulled out in 1992, much to the dismay of residents and neighborhood officials who worried that the loss of the neighborhood's only supermarket would be a blow to the large number of low income individuals and seniors who don't own a vehicle. Luckily, the city and neighborhood organizations stepped in to make sure that a supermarket would remain, and Safeway agreed to leave fixtures and equipment. A Eugene-based neighborhood economic development group bought the building and recruited a man with many years of grocery experience. Just six weeks after Safeway's departure, the supermarket reopened as a northwest franchise known as Red Apple Market. Besides being very structurally unremodeled, Safeway's trademark still lives on, as there is still a Safeway price sticker in the back of one of the shelves in the paper products department!
-350 E 40th ave. Opened mid-1960s, a mid-1990s renovation covered up the original Marina roof, inside and out. This location originally had a "Safeway Variety Center" attached or within. Seems like it was sort of like a Super S, but without a pharmacy.
-1159 Highway 99N. Opened late 1950s, became Price Chopper in the 1990s, closed around 2000, and is now an indoor miniature golf center. This location also had a "Safeway Variety Center".
-2060 River Rd. Opened July 1968, this is still pretty original, but the architectural style conformed to a pre-existing, neighboring Bi-Mart, and therefore has a flat roof instead of a Marina roof. This store originally had a snack bar and an in-store bakery "bake shop". Both are gone. Later on, the store added a deli and a florist, and only the deli remains.

SPRINGFIELD
-160 S. 14th st. Opened January 15, 1956. At 180 x 135 ft and with 14,000 square feet of sales area, this was touted as "the largest Safeway store in the whole Pacific Northwest" at the time of its opening. This one also had an in-store bakery. Safeway left the building in the late 1980s, and this is now a Grocery Outlet. This store once had a freestanding sign tower like the former Redding, CA Safeway.
