I remember Gary B in DC used to have a lot of pictures of old Safeway stores in parts of MD as well as in Washington, DC.

These three are currently on my mind right now... one of them was in Prince Frederick, MD.

My question about these is: when were these three Safeways in MD originally built? Since I know two of them had the old mosaic-style "S" logo, then I wonder if these two actually began their lives with the old Marina roof before being potentially false-fronted during the mid to late 1970s, as well as having been expanded large enough to claim the "Super Safeway" title (for stores 35,000 sq. ft. and larger)? I do know the Safeway Marketplace branding on these same two stores dated from circa 1990.

The first store, in Prince Frederick, opened in 1979 and was a rebuild/expansion of a store that opened in the early 1970s (and was not a marina). The second store looks to me like the one in the Twinbrook Shopping Center in Fairfax Virginia, it was an original build that opened in 1978. Finally, the third store was in Arnold Maryland and was an original build that opened in 1971. It was not a marina. Both the Prince Frederick and the Arnold stores have been replaced by bigger stores on the same sites.

Thank you so much. I do remember the names of those other sites now. I never realized Safeway used the mosaic "S" that late in time for the Twinbrooke (on 9525 Braddock Road) and Prince Frederick locations (by then, they usually used a lighted version of that logo; i.e., the expanded Hillcrest Super Safeway initially had that version in 1979 on the site of a much smaller Safeway initially built circa 1951).
