Apologize if this store has been posted before but there are still some discussions had about the epic signage for the old Benson Safeway in Kent, Washington. The Benson Safeway as we all called it was opened as a Marina style in the 1960s, it was instantly a hit with the area and was a high performing store for years into the 1980s until Fred Meyer built not one but two new sparkling new stores in the area, the neighboring Safeway was expanded, and Costco was making headway. At one point the Benson Safeway had 13 front end registers to keep up with customer demand. The old Safeway sign out front is mid century magic and is still photographed to this day. By the 1990s customer traffic was down significantly, the instore Bakery closed, and there was just too much competition and with new Safeway built not to far away, alas the old store closed and is now a Grocery Outlet. The old Luckys store across the street closed in the 1980s, Luckys just never took hold in the Seattle area and they left town. The Benson Safeway, the little store that could.
