West Castle Restaurants in Southern California

Back in the mid 1980s, I came across a White Castle clone in Long Beach, CA called "West Castle." I don't remember exactly where it was, but it was fairly close to the Douglas Aircraft Company and the Long Beach Airport.

From what I remember, the building was similar to White Castles of the day, as was the menu. Curious about the restaurant's pedigree, I asked the manager if they were affiliated with White Castle, but he gave what I thought was a very vague, evasive answer. He did say there were others remaining to be built in the area.

The burgers were a poor imitation of a WC slider, and included (horrors!) both mustard and ketchup. It was several years before I got back to Long Beach, but the West Castle was gone. I've not been able to find any history of the chain or whether White Castle filed suit again them.

I found a newspaper article saying that West Castle was sued by White Castle and lost the name from 1988, and while the newspaper itself is from California, the article claims that the chain is based in Las Vegas. So, I'm not sure if its the same chain from California.
