Shop-Rite's discount dept. store division?

Post by retail_person_247 »

Grand Union had Grand Way
Stop & Shop owned Bradlees
Big Bear had Harts
Meijer had Thrifty Acres (and a small concept called "Meijer Square" for a few years)
Red Owl had had their Family Centers
Copps had discount department stores under their own name (Simply just called Copps Department Store)
Giant Landover had a chain called Super Giant, and they also had Giant Department stores
Canadian chain Steinberg had Miracle Mart discount stores

And Shop-Rite had... Big Scot (Yes, with one "T", not two)

Did Shop-Rite own this? Was this their discount division? Or was it just a completely unrelated discount store that had an agreement with them or something?

My guess is the latter (and maybe not even an agreement). It was not uncommon for an an anchor to do a "welcome" promotion when a new store entered the center.

Shop-Rite was/is more a co-op than an actual chain, although they did/do have some corporate-owned stores, so a Shop-Rite-owned discount chain would present logistical challenges. All I can really dig up about Big Scot is that they operated one or more stores in the Hudson Valley area of New York, and nothing that really suggests a connection to Shop-Rite. But I suppose it's possible there could be a connection to a specific Shop-Rite member.

They are still a "member owned cooperative", with members varying from those who own just one store to others that have dozens. They do have a corporate subsidiary (ShopRite Stores) that is run by Wakefern (the name of the co-op), and they have a fair number of stores now, as they bought out one member (Big V) when they were in bankruptcy a number of years back.
Big V was the member who had stores in the Hudson Valley (and all the way up to the Albany area) - pretty much most any ShopRite in NY State outside of the metro NYC/Westchester areas. So, if there was any connection, that would probably be who made such a connection.

I don't go back far enough (being born in 1976, and being further up towards Albany) to know anything specific on this, but that is a general overview for informational purposes.
The stores I know of were either separate buildings (most of the greater Albany locations) or partnered with other known chains (like Barkers/Kings/Ames in one spot, Jamesway in another and a Kmart that was apparently originally a Grants in a third).

Oshawa Group in Canada (franchiser of IGA up there pre-Sobeys) had Towers/Bonimart
Jewel had Turn Style
Lucky had Gemco/Memco
Ralphs had The Giant (formerly Zody's)
Vornado, the Two Guys/Unimart parent, owned Food Giant/DeFalco's

Since you brought up Canada it reminded me about Steinberg's Miracle Mart

Uncle Bill's & Ontario shared a parent with Pick-n-Pay
Fisher Foods owned Claber's
Kohl's supermarkets and department stores originally had the same parent
Farmer Jack (Borman) owned Yankee

Drug store chains also got into diccount department stores, sometimes because they had leased departments in these stores
Gray Drug owned Rink's/Bargain City
Walgreen's owned Globe
