8000 Central Ave SE might be the prize here. It's a well-preserved early-1950s Safeway with faint labelscar still visible on both sides of the pylon. And at least until recently, it still housed a food store.
I've been to Albuquerque once in my life, but I didn't have time to sightsee while I was there. Not sure when the next chance will be...

I have driven by that store and maybe even grabbed a photo, but it was probably 1997 or 1998 and it was probably a crummy video capture.

Does anyone know the history or context of how Piggly Wiggly ended up with a few stores that looked like Safeway Marina's?
The 913 Sunset Road Piggly Wiggly was what triggered the inquiry. I thought it may have been a Safeway originally since there was one across the street later on (a replacement store situation) but I didn't find any sources stating it was a former Safeway. I also found that there was another ABQ Piggly Wiggly that resembled a Marina.

An article showing the ABQ Piggly Wiggly with a design similar to a Marina:

An article showing multiple (grainy) design pictures of ABQ Piggly Wiggly's:

On a Route 66 roadtrip this past week and I happened upon the former marina Safeway at 5314 Central Avenue! I looked in the locations list above and it was only listed in 1975 and 1980, but not sure if this actually dates back to the 1960s.

What about the Lowe's Market Marina at 4701 4th St. NW in Albuquerque? I can't tell if it is still operating as a full line grocery store but appears to be operating in some form. It seems to be off the Lowe's Market.com website.. but they still appear to have an open gas station in the parking lot.

Update- 4701 4th St. Lowe's was converted to a Food King Cost Plus unit. Conversion was just made and they are having a "grand opening" right now. So still open, and part of the Lowe's chain, with the Cost Plus 10% format.
