If I get some time I might take a trip down there. There's a couple old Marinas-turned-independent I wanted to check out.storewanderer wrote:http://sdnews.com/view/full_story/20674 ... t_popular1
How does the inside of this store look...?

There's some of the original interior left. No signage but the wood veneer back wall and clock are intact. (Sorry, I have a big backlog of SoCal photos to post.)

Looks like Vons signage from the conversion era (repainted of course).

I thought that too, but from the original article I didn't get the feel that it had ever operated as a Vons. The current leaseholders apparently took possession in 1988 so if it was ever a Vons, it was very briefly.submariner wrote:Looks like Vons signage from the conversion era (repainted of course).
Re: Apple Tree- San Diego- Former Safeway
Vons acquired Safeway's Southern California division on August 30th, 1988.
The article states that these owners took over the OB location on August 28th, 1988 so i's safe to say this location was never a Vons.
I remember that store still had power-penny Sweda cash registers at around that time when most stores already had scanners. It was (and is) a tiny store but there is no other supermarket competition in the area. The only other market in OB at the time was Mayfair (where I worked in high school and first couple years of college) which is no a RiteAid.

Looks like You're right, the script is *very* close, but the Vons "D" has a longer tail at the top of the letter, and the script is more italic:

They must have bought the signage (appears to be repainted) from the Texas AppleTree stores (all former Safeways) that closed in the early 1990s. As you may know, the whole 100-store Houston division spun off but couldn't sustain itself, and within a few years sold all but half a dozen of its stores, which went to an independent that kept the name and operations (it finally sold the last few stores about four or five years ago)

Apparently the supermarket reopened in another location:

CVS has since moved into the space:

The only bad thing is that OB residents now have no grocery stores in their neighborhood.
