The former Acme in Havre De Grace Md that closed two years ago to become a Flea Market is to become a SavALot. The Down town SavA Lot located in a 1949 A&P will then close it doors.. The 1949 A&P is located rigthy up to the Bay and has survived numerous floods over its sixty tears in operation as a Supermartket. This Sav Alot was unique that it kept its meat Box cutting room and cut frsh meat and did not sell prepack. Thye Acme which moved from a downtown location in the late60!s,to route 40 will once again serve as a Supermarket. Gerry

Did this A&P have a "barrel" roof, similar to the standard Penn Fruit design?

Anyway, the Acme in Havre de Grace was really unique. It was more rectangular than square, not quite like any other Acme I know of. Yet it had a smaller version of the standard late 60's/70's Acme facade.

Yes it is a strange plot of land that it is on and the store was built to fit it. It is actualyu not much larger then the unit it replaced downtown and now divided ionto several store fronts. It does have the advantage of being on route 40 and the thougth at the time was that it would pick up traffic from other towns . Acme felt that they could control the area with stores on route 40 from Elkton to North East to Havre Degrace. It worked for about 20 years and then the bottom droped out.

CVS had wanted this site, but built a store in the parking lot instead due to some lease issue. It seems so weird that they would build a new store in front of a small plaza where the anchor store is empty. There had been an Eckerd in the center which moved across the street to a standard 90's drive-thru model store, now a Rite Aid. The old one is today Dollar General.

Hi, SAV A Lot was worried enough to move the entrance to the side lot. So that people would not get hit by carsjust tring to get into the place.
