The Dec. 3, 2009 edition of the Pleasant Hill-Martinez Record (a weekly insert to the Contra Costa Times) says that Safeway may soon change its location in northern Pleasant Hill in central Contra Costa County. The article "Recession hampers revitalization" by Lisa P. White says a Safeway store is now located in DVC Plaza, built in the early 1970s. A Kmart is also in the center, located on Contra Costa Blvd. The article says that the City of Pleasant Hill added the shopping center area to the Pleasant Hill Commons redevelopment project area in 2008. The article says that consultants believe that the plaza's layout and design are outdated, especially in comparison with "trendy, pedestrian-friendly lifestyle shopping centers such as San Jose's Santana Row."

The article says that Safeway is in negotiations to take over the former Mervyns at 707 Contra Costa Blvd. (just north of Sun Valley Mall, backing on I-680). A Safeway spokeswoman says that the new location could open in early 2011 and would include a gourmet meat section, wine and cheese sections in 58,000 square feet. Safeway's lease in DVC Plaza expires in 2012. The article does not say whether Safeway will simply renovate the former Mervyn's building or if it will demolish and construct its own building on the site. (It's very unusual in Safeway's modern history in northern California for it to renovate buildings for re-use as a "new" Safeway supermarket.)

And, as discussed here, that Mervyn's was originally a Baza'r.
