Toronto: 1958 Grand Union nominated for designation

Despite imminent redevelopment of the rest of the shopping center, the former Grand Union supermarket at 15 Ellesmere Rd. in Toronto, later a Dominion and now a Metro, was nominated for historical designation by the Scarborough Community Council. It opened August 20, 1958, and represented the largest wooden arch construction in Canada to that date. Designation would not automatically prevent demolition, but would require the council to be notified of any plans, which would give time to consider nominating the structure for Heritage designation that would prevent demolition;
