HOLLYWOOD - Curbed's supermarket of choice, the Mayfair Market, has been undergoing a dramatic change on the inside. The crusty interior has been spiffed-up over the last few months, almost to the point of making us forget about the high prices. Friday, we were informed by our check-out lady that the Mayfair would soon make the full switch to Gelson's. Yes, the signage is coming down people. We were told the change of signs to Gelson's would take place in about a month. RIP Mayfair Market.

Sad. My first job in the grocery industry was at Mayfair #97 in Ocean Beach (San Diego), CA. They had 102 stores at the time. Store #114 (the store in question) had been the highest volume store in the company for many years and fittingly was the last survivor. There is a picture of this store elsewhere on this message board shot from an episode of the Brady Bunch. The original interior lasted until the late 1980's and was really cool. The wall package was basically a recreation of a film reel and there were stage lights running in a track around the perimiter. Produce had a huge natural stone wall that ran from floor to ceiling.

The store is in a wealthy area just south of the Hollywood Hills and is better suited for the full Gelson's format but it's a shame to see another old chain disappear.

It hasnt happened yet so... Can someone take some photos of the store to make sure that the last Mayfair can be remembered in memory along with photographs.

I wrote Gelsons a letter describing the importance the Mayfair name has to people and that the change of a name can have serious issues (Lucky-->Albertsons) with the way people feel about where they shop.
I havent heard back from them yet, but if necessary I will try to persuade them to change their minds (I doubt anything will be done but its worth a try)

BTW... Its great to have Lucky back!!!

It's unlikely I'll be able to get down there in the next couple of weeks, so if someone else can that would be great.

Someone at Gelson's contacted me several years back, in the early days of this site, mentioning with some pride that there still was a Mayfair-branded store in the chain. It's too bad they no longer see the name as an asset.
