Here is a list of Piggly Wiggly stores in the SFV from various ads in the LA Times. As far as I can tell these were the only stores in the LA area. A coworker who grew up in Reseda in the 50s and 60s always waxes nostalgic about the Piggly Wiggly in Reseda.

In March, 1964, Commerce Bancorporation purchased a controlling interest in Piggly WIggly in California. They announced plans to open 12 stores in the Continental format though it doesn't appear that they ever followed through with these plans.

These stores were open as of 1958:

7615 Balboa Blvd, Van Nuys--Independent market & paint store. The paint store currently has the 7615 address.

19255 Vanowen, Reseda--JoAnn Fabrics. At some point between 1967 and 1969 this was rebranded as a Continental Market. There's an ad for an auction of the fixtures for 6/6/72. Can someone tell me if the sign on the corner is an original Piggly Wiggly sign? I've always wondered that when I've driven by.

19255 Vanowen, Reseda--JoAnn Fabrics - I vaguely remember this location as a Boys Market at one time, as well.

8450 Foothill Blvd, Sunland - I don't have any specific memory about this location but the sign was similar to what Boys used to use.

The store on Ventura Blvd. was a Boys Continental so maybe Boys bought some of these stores at some point?

As of 1969 it was known as Contintental Market and it was also called that in the auction ad from 1972. By 1974 it was Home Silk Shop.

In 1974 it was a Sears Outlet Store and by 1977 it had become a Sears Catalog Store.

If the Reseda location is the same one I am thinking about it was a Boys in the early 80's when I first moved to L.A., closing sometime around 1985. My Credit Union office was located in Reseda and I used to drive by it all the time. Maybe I'm thinking of a different location but from the aerial photo (and expeically the sign) it looks identical.

JoAnn Fabrics has their entrance on the Tampa side, despite the Vanowen address. There are other stores with an entrance on the Vanowen side, so it's possible there was a market in that part of the building. I checked a 1982 Boys ad and I didn't see a store in Reseda.

Is it possible you're thinking of Dale's on the corner of Tampa and Saticoy? It would have become a Lucky in 1984 and is now an Albertsons.

I will try to drive out there when I get back from vacation and take a picture. It's driving me crazy now... lol.
