Some of you guys wrote about the three stores that Albertsons owned (before the breakup) in Montebello (60 Freeway at Via Campo). To refresh your memory, in early 2006, Albertsons owned Max Foods, Albertsons-Savon, and Savon Drugs. Max and Savon were in that large shopping center that started as Zody's. Albertsons-Savon is in a building across the street that looked like it was built in the 1960's. I first went there when it was 99 Price/Ranch Market, which had a mini-mall, then it became Lucky, and now Albertsons-Savon. In order for Supervalu to rename Max Foods as Lucky, they need to close the Albertsons-Savon. Both stores are doing quite well eventhough Savon is now CVS. Supervalu should keep the Max Foods banner (under either New Albertsons or New Lucky).

The 99 Ranch Market was down a little ways in a former bowling alley.

The Albertsons was originally where the Office Depot is now. Around 87, after Zody's closed, Grocery Warehouse and Circuit City moved into the former Zody's store, Grocery Warehouse was a warehouse store for Albertsons.
Albertsons closed the Albertsons around the time the new store opened.

Luckys was originally across the street. That was Luckys until the merger in the late 90s.. Then it became Albertsons-Sav-on.

Yes, Supervalu would need to close the Albertsons in order to open the Lucky store. The Albertsons and Max Foods are doing so well still that it would hurt business if they closed one, so no plans right now to close one.

Is the old 99 building still there?

They left because it was hard for a mainstream Chinese grocer be in a hispanic dominant area. Note that in Monterey Park, just about all Chinese grocers (Win Hop Fung, Tak Shing Hong, 99 Ranch) are all near Garvey Ave. American and Hispanic grocers (Albertsons/Max Foods, Ralphs) are all near the 60 Freeway or East LA College.
