Storewanderer and I were browsing the records for California's Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (which deals with all the licenses for retail sales of alcohol, and lists addresses)...

My question: Is this a "sideways marina" like I think it is, and was that the original building design, or was the front shifted around?

I believe that this was actually a Mayfair market, at least as of the late 1960s (does that explain a lot?). It makes sense that it would have been acquired by Brentwood, like Mayfair's 1966 market at 1305 S Winchester Blvd., then become a Safeway like that one did. I think Cash N Carry occupies the W San Carlos st. supermarket space, and the facade of the shopping center was redone in the 1990s/2000s. I believe that this was a Safeway up to the late 1997 ending date of the liquor license, since a map from 1994 that I have listed that shopping center as Safeway shopping center. I'll bet the closure happened when Safeway moved to 1300 W San Carlos st.

You're absolutely right. The center itself opened in 1955, and was even known in 1964 as the "Mayfair Center". I can't confirm the subsequent tenants, but your assessment makes a lot of sense.
