Market Basket Locations

Market Basket had a location here in Monterey Park. It closed in the 1980's but was empty well into the 90's before finally getting remodeled in the late 90's to become a Blockbuster Video and other small stores.
That was about all I remember of them. we used to shop across the street at Fazio's, later Albertsons...

I remember the Basket
There was a Market Basket store in Canoga Park's Fallbrook Square when I was growing up in the 1960's and 70's, but my mother was a devoted Alpha Beta shopper, so I didn't get to visit the Market Basket as much as I wanted. I do remember some of the radio commercial's jingle..."Deep cut discounts save you more/At your Market Basket store!"
Last time I visited the Los Angeles area, the Market Basket was gone, gone, gone. Sad.

Market Basket Locations
I do remember few Market Basket locations in the Ontario/Chino area. One was on Mountain Ave. between 4th St. and I St in Ontario. After MB left, it became a Boys Market, then a House of Fabrics, and then urban renewal saw the entire center torn down and rebuilt as an Albertsons. One in Chino was built in the mission style architecture that was mentioned earlier around 1982 on Central and Philadelphia. Shortly thereafter, MB left California, and it became a Ralphs, then a Vons, then a Drug Emporium, then was torn down and rebuilt as a Gigante supermarket.
I'm guessing that you're talking about the Hughes/Ralphs on West Whittier Blvd (near Idaho).
Do you happen to know if the Big Lots (former PicNSave) on the northeast corner of Harbor/La Habra was also a Market Basket. The woven tower logo has always made me think that it was.
And there was another market on the southwest corner of this intersection - Super A?

Market Basket had a site in Hacienda Heights CA on Hacienda Boulevard. It became Ralphs. Then Sav-On. The Sav-On name was then ended...to convert all to OSCO. The Sav-On name then returned. The media had stated that OSCO did not translate well in Spanish. Market Basket had MANY replacement stores...probably a reason why they left...spent too much money on replacement stores. These stores had curved Spanish-style arches. The older store was many times across the street. For example...the Market Basket in Rowland Heights CA on Colima Road was replaced by a new store across the street. When Market Basket left...VONS moved from their former location on Nogales. The old VONS became PIC-N-SAVE (now Big Lots!). The original Market Basket, and replacement Market Basket are now Asian markets.

Below is a typical Market Basket facade. This is my local Albertsons in Granada Hills, which I believe is a former Market Basket based on the architecture. (I know that it was a Smith's Food King until 1984 when it became a Lucky. I can't find any evidence that it was a MB though, it just looks like one. Smiths did buy a few MBs including the one in Mission Hills a couple miles away that's now a Vons that just had a Lifestyle remodel.)
That is indeed a former Market Basket. Typical style. Can't tell from the shadowing...but I believe the old Spanish-style hanging lamp is still above the entrance (directly above the patron entering the store). Yes, you can tell it had been a LUCKY...as the DELI & BAKERY signs are the LUCKY style. thanks for the pix!runchadrun wrote:Below is a typical Market Basket facade. I would say that the BIG LOTS was indeed a Market Basket. That woven tower is the giveaway. From what I remember...all Market Basket sites had this funky woven thing!OCRedCub wrote:I'm guessing that you're talking about the Hughes/Ralphs on West Whittier Blvd (near Idaho).

That Albertson's facade is the same as a now closed location on Sierra in Fontana. The grocery store in the same parking lot as the old McDonald's in Downey used to be a Market Basket.
And there was a very old office building in L.A. near some train tracks that I guess was once the local HQ for the chain. I'm sure it has been torn down since. The look was reminiscent of a furniture store in Colton that still has the Helms Bakery logo above the door and early 20th century ornate decorations around the roofline.

I drive by the Downey location daily. I am guessing its the Pep Boys today. I was wondering the other day what this may have been.javelin wrote:That Albertson's facade is the same as a now closed location on Sierra in Fontana. Yes I would say that was a Market Basket as it looks the same as the one that was in Chino on Central and Philadelphia now slated to become a Superior Super Warehouse.
Re: Market Basket Locations
Noticed an old Market Basket in San Bernardino.
on 9th Street, at Waterman Avenue.
Same facade as picture above.
Currently Fiesta Market.

Re: Market Basket Locations
Update on the former Market Basket building in Chino. Superior sub leased it to Deardens (a furniture & appliance store that caters to Latinos). Superior has a store south of there on Central and Walnut that will remain. Mainly Superior got the building to get the Liquor License from Gigante.
