Another SoCal location, 1342 North Alvarado in Los Angeles (near Sunset Boulevard), now operating as Vons. The marina roof here is very reminiscent of the setup at the flagship store on Market Street in San Francisco.

I remember that Safeway store in Pacific Beach. It was converted to a Vons after they were sold, and continued as a Vons store until it closed around 2000.......oh did I forget to mention that there was already a Vons store right across the street from it? Both stores stayed open together for about 14 years.

I was in both of those Pacific Beach Stores.

There was a drug store in the "original Vons" center which was branded Thrifty, but felt nothing like a Thrifty. I often wondered if that drugstore started life as a CVS.

From my observation it seems the original Vons was doing a much better business than the former Safeway, although the former Safeway was right at the busy intersection, and also had a much larger and more spacious drug store (Sav-On) next door.

I wondered what the deal was with those two stores, but upon going into the former Safeway one immediately realized why both stores were Vons.

South Pasadena is a similar situation. There was a Safeway accross the street from Vons and they didn't want any competition, so they turned the Safeway into a Pavilions. Both stores are still open today and they did a 'Lifestyle' remodel on the Pavilions. The Vons doesn't have much business anymore and I wonder if they will close it.

A few posts back in the thread, I found that Kansas City area 1960s-era Safeway sign being used for a church that had taken over the building...

Thanks to Live Local, I've been able to screenshot that very building (which doesn't do much to belie its supermarket heritage), which is on the Kansas side of the KC/MO border.

My guess is an 80's Safeway (or remodeled in the 80's). That's almost exactly what the Safeway on Santa Monica Blvd. in West Hollywood CA mentioned in a different thread looked like when it was remodeled in 1984.

However, at that time, U.S. 67 and Texas 174 had their intersection near the camp. These two major roads coming together at Granbury and Henderson Streets was a perfect location for a tourist camp.

I can remember in the late ’40s walking to town with mother, and on the way home she would stop at “The Rock” and get a hamburger. There were usually some gypsies staying at the tourist camp and they would come around and want to tell your fortune as you ate your hamburger.

These cabins were torn down when Safeway bought the property and built its store in the late ’60s.
