Post by Steve Landry »

Not sure of the spelling. It was located in Beverly Hills and based in San Francisco?

Gump's is a wonderful old San Francisco (since 1861) home furnishings store, specializing in Asian Art, furniture, china, crystal, and jewelry. For years, they had one store located at 250 Post Street, just off Union Square. When the store was sold in the late 1970's, the new owners decided to expand and opened stores in Beverly Hills, Dallas, and Houston. The three branches were never financially successful, and were ultimately closed. A decade or so ago, the store lost their lease at 250 Post, and moved one block down to 135 Post. It's a stunningly beautiful store, filled with many unusual items. Despite their motto, 'Good Taste Costs No More', their prices are generally high. But the staff is always gracious, and never intimidating to us mortal browsers. But for generations of San Franciscans, receiving a gift in a gold Gump's box tied with a red ribbon, is a sure bet to get one's pulse racing.

BTW: While in Yokohama, I stumbled across a tiny Gump's store in the Hotel New Grand, which, I discovered, is part of a small group of Japanese Gump's stores located in hotels and department stores.
