A&P in the Los Angeles area, 1964 and 1969

Post by runchadrun »

These stores were listed in a display ad in the LA Times dated 2/27/1964:

1853 N. Vermont Ave, Los Angeles--Post office
Historic photo from 1940: http://helios.library.ca.gov/soca/laci/1992-0237.jpg
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... ne=3597758

7910 Sunset Blvd, Los Angeles--Rite Aid. Originally A&P and Thrifty were separate stores but Thrifty moved into the space when A&P closed.

5635 Hollywood Blvd, Los Angeles--Carpet store
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... ne=6892265

1835 S. La Cienega, Los Angeles--**edit**Original store demolished in 1969. See reply #2 below.*** This shopping center had a Montgomery Wards, which is now the Staples and LA Fitness. The store across the street is obviously a former grocery store, but I only remember it as Staples before it moved across the street. It reminds me of the former Westchester Ralphs.Today it's used as a studio.

5116 E. Second St, Long Beach--Rite Aid
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... ene=240873

3426 Seventh St, Long Beach--Not sure. There's a gable Albertsons (probably a former Alpha Beta) in the block behind this address.
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... ne=1550277

10929 Lindbrook, Westwood--Mann National Theater. This theater was the last single-screen theater built in LA and is slated to close. It keeps getting its lease extended for a few months at a time.

More on the pending closure (which hasn't happened yet): http://dailybruin.com/news/articles.asp?ID=35922

2828 Wilshire Blvd, Santa Monica--New Balance store. Still has the pylon.

4770 Lankershim, North Hollywood--This address is in the same shopping center as the store in the 1969 list but the address matches the donut shop.

13626 Victory, Van Nuys--Circuit City

http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... ene=301938

3745 Foothill Blvd, Pasadena--Whole Foods. This was either a Ralphs or an Alpha Beta (or both) before becoming a Whole Foods.
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... ne=3443978

4243 Woodruff, Lakewood--Not sure
David has this photo in the A&P history section as being in Long Beach but I wonder if it's this store instead http://www.groceteria.com/ap/gallery/pages/Image63.html
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... ne=6705730

16051 E. Whittier Blvd, Whittier--JoAnn Fabrics

http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... ene=617014

http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... ene=981489

730 Miles Ave, Indio--This address comes up as in La Quinta and there's new residential and a a business park there.
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q ... .00589&t=k

235 W. Fourth St, Oxnard--Not sure. This is in the Oxnard Civic Center.
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q ... 9&t=k&om=1

These additional stores were listed in an ad dated 1/23/1969. Besides the possible North Hollywood replacement store the Sunset, Vermont, Seventh St, Westwood, and Oxnard stores are not listed in the 1969 ad.

9937 Walker St, Cypress--Marukai Asian store
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... ne=6769677

127 N San Dimas Canyon Rd, San Dimas--Closed shopping center. Looks like a colonial roof.
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... ne=6899577

4744 Lankershim, North Hollywood (different address on the same block as the 1964 address)--Roger Dunn's Gold Shop. This store still has the colonial weathervane thing at the top of the gable.
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... ne=3373060

East C at Third, Upland--Not sure
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... ene=671852

1882 N Placentia, Placentia--Former Longs Drugs
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... ene=137792

16212 Parthenia, Sepulveda (now called North Hills)--Food4Less. This is definitely a new build. If you look at the other views you'll see the F4L gas station on the corner and the building on the side of F4L under construction.

1835 S. La Cienega, Los Angeles was a Hughes Market when I moved to L.A. in the early 1980s. I don't know if it was an A&P before that.

Accross the street there was an Albertson's (in the shopping center) which I believe was a new build for them in the space where Circuit City is now.

I found a display ad from 5/29/1969 that Shopping Bag had taken over all Socal A&P stores.

Edit: More information on Shopping Bag/A&P/Fazio's:
In May, 1969, EF McDonald, parent of Shopping Bag, bought 30 stores from A&P for $4.1m giving it a total of 50 stores. (EF McDonald bought Shopping Bag from Vons after Vons lost an antitrust suit in the Supreme Court.) In 1972 Shopping Bag announced it was selling 46 stores to the parent of Fazio's. The remaining stores were closed.

1835 is an odd address so that puts it on the west side of the street, in the shopping center. I found an article in the Times archive about the 1960 opening of the La Cienega store and it looks very much like the stores in Arcadia and Van Nuys with the stone on the corners.

A 1968 article announces the shopping center including Wards, Thrifty, A&P, and United California Bank (later First Interstate). The site was the former Adohr dairy. An article dated 8/10/1969 announcing the start of construction says that the store is a Shopping Bag and that the existing store would be demolished to make way for the center. The address of the new store was 1839 S La Cienega. Later it became Fazio's, then Sunset Building Center, and then Circuit City.

Fazio's was later bought by Albertsons yet none of the A&Ps are Albertsons today.

Now to the store across the street at 1830 S. La Cienega... I found an interesting article about that store from 9/26/1974. It was called Daylite Supermarket and was sold to Hughes by the aging founders. They had to spend $80,000 to upgrade their cash registers to stay competetive and didn't want to spend the money. Of course that isn't the only reason--"Food is no longer profitable for the independent grocer."

There was another Shopping Bag in La Crescenta, California on Foothill Blvd. and the downstairs was named Merit Mart. My Grandmother worked there, Jackie Wasson
