McCoy's Market, Whittier
This was a ranch-style market on Leffingwell Road just west of Santa Gertrudes. I'm pretty sure it was where the UHaul now stands. As a kid in the 1970s I used to get my hair cut at the adjoining barber shop (John's?) near the Mobil Station while mom shopped. There is a "Puffy Taco" on the other edge of the lot that's been there forever.
I remember this place was not the tidiest. Flies buzzing around the produce, etc.
Were there others? or just this one?

McCoys Markets
Yes McCoys Markets disappeared sadly as most of their stores were like you described. THe last one that opened before they closed the chain was a beautiful store on Florence and Garfield which has been torn down and replaced with a strip mall. I believe McCoys had about 25 stores in southern CA. I also remember the one on Anaheim on Ball Rd & I think Beach Blvd. or possibly Brookhurst. Anybody else can help out with more information on McCoys?

I couldn't find a whole lot about McCoy's. The Norwalk store is the current Crawford's and a former Raisin market. In 1984 the Bell Gardens store moved from Eastern and Florence to a block north, to where a store called Foodland Market was located. It moved to make way for a Toys R Us.
here are a couple of locations from the 1970s:
13999 S Western, Gardena
2950 W Ball Road, Anaheim
These stores were open in the 1950s:
15991 Paramount Blvd, Paramount
136 E Anaheim St, Long Beach
5820 Bellflower Blvd (not sure if it's Lakewood or Long Beach)
2010 Garfield St, Hollydale (Montebello perhaps?)

McCoys Markets
Yes I remember the McCoys on Ball Rd in Anaheim as a kid and like I read in another thread, lots of flies. I remember poking holes in the shrink wrapped packags of lard. My first job in a supermarket in 1979 was with a former McCoys manager that opened his own store in Ontario called Klapps Market, since burned down and now houses are built on the site on Euclid just south of Walnut. Thanks for the info Runchadron.
McCoys Markets
Oh yes I remember the McCoys in Gardena. It was a store inside a dept. store kind of like the Gemco concept except that the dept. store was different owners, I think it was called Cal Grant or Grants. I bought my first Beta VCR and had to finance it because it was so expensive.

Re: McCoys Markets
I think you're right. It's the area where Garfield now meets the 105 freeway. The street numbers have also changed from 4 digits to 5 digits so the 2010 address doesn't match.. There's a pylon store at Garfield and Main that is a definite possibility of being McCoy's.Jeff wrote:Hollydale I beleive is in the area of South Gate.

It was called Cal-Fed. When I saw the ad in the Times archive, I got confused trying to figure out what a grocery store was doing inside a bank...scanman2 wrote:It was a store inside a dept. store kind of like the Gemco concept except that the dept. store was different owners, I think it was called Cal Grant or Grants.

Mc Coys Markets
There was a Mc Coys market in santa ana, at 17th st. & grand. after it closed it became a vons. Last time I was in the area the vons was gone and other non foodstores had moved in.
McCoys Gardena
Yes now that I hear it the name was Cal Fed obviously not related to the banks lol! That store had several independent stores inside, electronics, clothes, shoes, and of course the McCoys which was later and independent grocer called Big B Warehouse.

A little more history on the McCoy's Market at Beach & Ball Rd in Anaheim.
It was originally opened as a Michael's Market in/or about 1964. The store
manager was yours truly. The Assistant Manager was Otis Ozolins, the
Meat Dept. Manager was John Nelson and the Produce Manager was a man
named Neely, he was the son of the Sales Manager Rudy Neely. Although there were
55,000 cars a day going by the store it never became a medium or high volume unit.

Re: McCoy's Market, Whittier
Old thread, but:
The Hollydale McCoy's was indeed in "South Gate." I remember it well. Hollydale was a strange "subarea" on the southwest edge of South Gate, adjacent to Downey and Paramount.
The Lynwood McCoy's was on Atlantic Blvd., just south of Imperial. It was adjacent to a Hiram's grocery store AT Imperial and Atlantic. The Hiram's later changed to Lucky's. The McCoy's slogan was "Where your dollar has no end."
Here's a link to a 1966 McCoy's ad that I found by googling the slogan:
