Westside Pavilion basement

Post by pseudo3d »

Here's something I have become curious about--Westside Pavilion, the late California mall that was built in 1985, received an outdoor expansion in 1991 (later replaced with a large movie theater) and eventually closed in 2019 for Google offices.

From what I can piece together, the basement of the mall held a Vons supermarket to replace the store that was demolished for the shopping mall, but this was never part of the mall proper. However, I do remember reading someplace that after the Vons this was turned into mall-connected retail space. You can see here in this picture that the escalators descend to the basement. The signage says "Vogue Alley"; from what I can determine it was some sort of woman's clothing store, but other pictures I've seen the escalators just descend to the basement with no signage. So what exactly happened with the basement here? Were the escalators added after Vons left, or were they just direct to the parking deck below?
