Just in time for your weekend, El Paso chain grocery/supermarket locations, 1925-2020:

Gets interesting starting about 1987 with the Furr's acquisition of Safeway's El Paso division.

Seems as if Smith's was in town before 1990. Was this the "Food King" operation?

Also looks as if 10060 Rushing Rd was still Smith's in 2006. I haven't seen anything to suggest Smith's was in El Paso past the 2001 store swap with Furr's.

The Pebble Hills store apparently did predate the other stores, despite some newspaper articles that claimed otherwise. This was apparently a conversion of a Foodway store, part of Winn-Dixie's ill-fated entry into the market; Winn-Dixie sold the stores to Smith's around 1978, apparently. And indeed some of the other locations apparently opened prior to 1990 as well.

The one 2006 entry was probably a lingering typo in the city directories. I'll research it; they're not altogether uncommon in directories from the early 2000s.

The current Food King Cost Plus in El Paso is a relatively new format introduced by Lowe's Supermarkets. It is unrelated to the old Smith's Food King branding, though the Smith's stores in El Paso did use the "Smith's Food King" branding in their early El Paso stores.

(Some assorted edits here as I did a little research.)
