Re: Early Kmart closures (PRE-1994)
Speaking of more Early closures, there was a Ex-Grants in North Attleboro on Rober F Toner Blvd. This store opened in 1976 and Closed in 1992 to relocate to Bristol place in a shiny new attractive Building and it closed March 31, 2017 and is currently Vacant.the Rober F Toner one is now Shaws. There was also another Ex-Grants in Chelmsford MA, that closed in 1992 and got replaced by Market Basket. There was also a store in Swensea on G A R Hwy (That was my mom's childhoosd store), the store opened in 1971 and Closed in 1983, it was replaced by Stuarts and later became Building 19 in 1992. The store was demolished to make way for a fresh new Target in around 2010. There was also a Kmart in Cincinatti OH on Beechmont Rd (They relcoated to the Former Hills building ina round the Early 90's) that opened in March 1967 and Closed by around 1984. It's been vacant for years and like Swensea, Tagret bought the building and knocked it down for their own. there was also a another Cincinatti area store that was demolished for housing. There was also a store in Fresno on Blackstone. That Kmart was gone by around 1985-1990 and has since been Subdivided into smaller stores.

There was also one in Swensea on 517 G A R Hwy and it opened in 1971 and closed in 1983. it later became Stuarts and Building 19. In 2011, it was demolished for a new Target store.
There was another Early closure in Chelmsford on 288 Chelmsford Ave, it opened in 1976 in a former Grants (Like North Attleboro) and closed in 1992, it relcoated to the recently closed Twerksbury store the same year. Chelmsford is now a Market Basket.

In the first post Cortlandville Mall is mentioned. Not sure what led to thinking that store closed in 1971, it actually was open through into one of the more recent rounds of closures in 2018. The Little Ceasars in it was active through to the end, too.
Camillus Mall is an earlier closure, simply because the mall died. It opened in 1981 and closed around 1996. Having the auto center attached saved about 2/3rds of the building, it became the bus garage for the high school next door. This was a standard store, when built the property had two grocery stores already. The layout was a little odd, it had a cafeteria in the rear center (which closed fairly early on), and some retail space behind the auto center area.
Auburn, NY had two Kmarts, I see the Grant Ave. Plaza in some 1994 closure listings but it's not clear when the Finger Lakes Mall store closed, perhaps the next year. In a slight irony, that mall's Sears would move into the empty K-mart space to make room for a Bass Pro, before being closed a few years ago.

I believe the one in Petersburg, VA also falls into this category but it's been a while since I researched the exact date it closed.
It's right behind this address: 2336 E Washington St, Petersburg, VA 23803

I remember finding out that 1710 11th Street in Huntsville, TX was originally a Kmart (later a Hastings for years, ultimately demolished for an H-E-B) but I can no longer find the reference.

Re: Early Kmart closures (PRE-1994)
Looking at both Google Maps (for historic street images) and Historic Aerials (for historic maps), you may be partially correct, that Kmart was in that center. The building that housed Hastings looks more like a Safeway, but the building to its right (east) at the end of the center looks like a Kmart building, possibly a Group 7. It isn't included on the 1/22/2002 list, so it definitely closed before that date.

Yes, I know I'm quoting an almost-decade old post, but for a reason. This exact Kmart actually did stay open into the 1990's. In fact, it, plus an older store in Southgate (#4021 at 13311 Eureka Road) were closed on January 10, 1995, (un)officially being replaced by a new Super Kmart (#4949 at 3710 Dix Highway in Lincoln Park) which had opened for business on October 17, 1994 (using the SK 2R prototype design).TenPoundHammer wrote: ↑09 Oct 2009 19:10 *25201 Outer Dr. in Melvindale apparently closed in the 1980s; it's not in a 1991 phone book of the area, and a Storetrax listing from 2000 just says it's a "former Kmart" built in 1967. It's now a megachurch.

Re: Early Kmart closures (PRE-1994)
In the D.C. area, there are at least two Kmarts that have been closed for more than 25 years. One was in Vienna/Tysons Corner (8055 Leesburg Pike, store #4231) and was a typical 70s-era Kmart. Surprisingly, it was only razed after about 10-15 years in operation for the luxury Fairfax Square mall.
Another area store in Alexandria (6303 Richmond Hwy, store #4391) relocated down US 1 in the late 1980s to a larger store. In its place, Kmart invited their Builders Square chain which lasted several years. It remained hallow for quite a while before converting to Walmart.

not sure if it counts, but there was a SS Kresge's in Schenectady, and a ex-Grant's K-Mart in Rotterdam

I found out what the Kmart's clsong date was, they closed December 21, 1990.
I found the ultimate Kmart Spreadsheet right here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... 2026071744

Re: Early Kmart closures (PRE-1994)
2255 Gellert Boulevard in South San Francisco was a KMart back in the 1970s, though it had become a Pak N Save supermarket by the 80s, and full switched over to regular Safeway branding ca. 2015-2016.

Re: Early Kmart closures (PRE-1994)
It's recently discovered on the Kmart Latest Datasheet that they opened November 2, 1978 and closed April 16, 1988. They relocated to a larger store on 8500 W. Crestline Ave where it remained open until 2003.storewanderer wrote: ↑07 Apr 2018 03:39 There was a very short lived one in the 6500 block of Coal Mine in Littleton, CO. Gone by the early 90's.
