This article has a number of photos of a visit that Soviet president Boris Yeltsin made to a Randall's grocery store in September of 1989, amazed at the sheer amount of food available compared to Russian grocery stores, which at the time (near the collapse of the Soviet Union) often had notoriously long lines and frequent shortages. It is said that this visit to a rather ordinary American grocery store may have hastened the demise of the Soviet Union, and caused Yeltsin to lose faith in Communism.
