All-American Superama Chain-San Diego Area-1959

Post by Jason B. »

All-American Superama apparently was a two-store grocery store chain in the San Diego area in 1959. An ad ran in the San Diego Union of Thursday, November 12, 1959.

The two locations of "All-American SUPERAMA" were:
(1) San Diego 5065 Logan, near Euclid and
(2) Lakeside Woodside & Channel Road

The chain's mascot (at least for this ad) was the “Bargain Bee”. The chain apparently centered its marketing on bees and honey. The ad trumpeted, “SEE … All American Superama’s Glass Beehive inside both of our markets … with 6000 busy Bees making honey right before your eyes! Stock up on our BEE-YUTIFUL bargains … ‘cause your All Americans are really humming this week.” -

A major item promoted in the ad was ‘superior’ brand honey – orange, clover, or sage. A 1-lb. jar cost 39 cents.

Not sure if they were the same company, but the All American supers in OC all became Albertsons upon purchase by same. San Clemente had one on N. El Camino Real between W. Mariposa and W. Marquita.

The Logan & Euclid location is gone, though there's a sizable parking lot nearby that seems out of place with the current businesses...

The Lakeside location could have been on one of two street corners, one has the Lakeside Plaza, and then there's a large grassy parcel around a gas station. The other two corners are unlikely as they seem to be age-appropriate housing areas, and a Marina VONS store.
