Liquor Barn locations in LA & OC, 1985

Post by runchadrun »

This list of Liquor Barn locations is from a display ad 7/4/1985 issue of the Los Angeles Times. It seems to incorporate all Los Angeles and Orange County locations, plus one in Ventura County.

(NOTE: It looks like the format of the local.live.com links has changed so some of the links don't work right. The addresses are correct and I'll do new lookups to make new links when I have the chance.)

8625 Woodman Ave, Panorama City--99 Cents Only store (note the Safeway-style freestanding sign)
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... ne=6732329

394 Moorpark Rd, Thousand Oaks--Address matches Office Max but there's no birds eye view
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... ene=360312

6751 Fallbrook Ave, Canoga Park--Trader Joe's
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... ne=6759134

16210 Devonshire Blvd, Granada Hills--Smart & Final. A Dale's Market and briefly a Lucky before becoming a Liquor Barn
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... ne=6707918

14417 Culver Dr, Irvine--Smart & Final
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... ne=6944585

5893 Lincoln Ave, Buena Park--Abandoned store. Googling the address yields City Furniture and Vista Paint
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... ne=6738899

25876 Muirlands, Mission Viejo--Albertsons (new build?)
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... ne=6353010

263 S Euclid, Anaheim--Closed store (the one with the brown roof)
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... ne=6742543

7420 Florence Ave, Downey--Ampola Market. This is the gable Safeway that has had pictures posted from the LA Public Library.

5858 Warner Ave, Huntington Beach--24 Hour Fitness

3760 Centinela Ave, Venice--Mitsuwa Market (former Super S?)
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... ne=7000882

1240 Vine St, Hollywood--Office Depot. On the site of the former Hollywood Ranch Market, as discussed in this thread: http://www.groceteria.com/board/viewtopic.php?t=519

http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... ne=6951026

1717 W Glenoaks, Glendale--Jons Marketplace, possible Marina store?
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... ne=3389070

10932 Westminster, Garden Grove--Vietnamese supermarket
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... ne=6868628

1726 Superior Ave, Costa Mesa--Tower Records (though not for much longer...)
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... ne=6999903

10402 Rosecrans Ave, Bellflower--Attached to this Kmart? Kmart's address is 10400
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... ne=7026695

1101 S Beach Blvd, La Habra--Looks like it was replaced with this new Vons
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... ne=1125258

2330 E Walnut Ave, Pasadena--Rite Aid. This is connected to a Vons which is a former Safeway. I wonder if they just subdivided the Safeway to carve out the Liquor Barn section.
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... ne=3432106

730 S Orange Ave, West Covina--Address matches Kmart. Maybe where the Joann Fabrics is, or the closed entrance to something on the side of the building.

The Liquor Barn on Muirlands in Mission Viejo was housed in what had been a Safeway. That center, built in the late sixties, was demolished in the mid to late nineties, so the Albertson's is new construction.

For historical purposes, that had been the second Safeway to serve MV. The first was a small, low slung affair built in a tiny center at the NW corner of La Paz and Chrisanta, which was built around 1964 and served the original core developments of MV, the Deane and La Paz homes. It (the original one) had been built in a style typical of the early MV commercial architectural requirements, which means lots of brown slump stone blocks, exposed brown painted beams and red Spanish tiles affixed to the roof. Earthtone-o-rama.

Looking at the sat view of that small center, it too appears to be a complete rebuild, as what is now parking used to be Safeway. So, in less than 40 years, all traces of that community's original grocery shopping heritage have been wiped from the landscape, which isn't a bit surprising for South Orange County.

The West Covina Liquor Barn (I-10/West Covina Parkway, off the Orange Ave miniramp from the eastbound) that became House of Fabrics (later Joann Fabrics) closed last year. It is now a brand new Sears Outlet store, a great supplement to the Sears-owned Big Kmart next door and the Sears a couple of blocks away at the Westfield Shoppingtown.

By the way, the Kmart side of the building first opened as a large shoe department store/warehouse before Kmart acquired it in the mid 1980's. I first went to the Kmart when they still had the big red K and a turquoise 1970-ish "mart" logo.

There's some info on the West Covina store on this thread: http://www.groceteria.com/board/viewtop ... 877&p=7467. Before it was a Liquor Barn it was a Vendome Liquor and before that possibly the grocery concession for the original tenant of the Kmart building, Save-Co and later Cal Stores.

This Kmart is listed elsewhere as having a Kmart Foods once upon a time. Perhaps this was a replacement tenant for the departed Kmart Foods.

This store has seen a lot of remodeling, although not always of the best quality. I am not sure if the Kmart Foods space was folded into the main store or if it was demolished and replaced with the attached stripmall stores. (This store once featured a typical 70s facade with windows along most of the store which have been bricked in, and of course a neon-red K.)

The building in the parking lot was once a Furrs cafeteria.

Torrance - corner of PCH and Anza Ave

I think it opened in either 85 or 86.
It was their only location in Southern California that had a tasting room. Boy, did I spend a lot of time there.....

There also was a Liquor Barn in Riverside in 1985 or so. If I remember correctly, it was on Madison Street (maybe Adams Street?) near the 91 Freeway onramp. I remember buying some German beer there with one of my high school buddies, somewhere around 1985-1986.

Yes. Original building (looks like a 60's era Safeway) hugged the I-5 northbound on ramp. The current Albertson's started as a Smith's Food King - Lucky and now Albertson's n sometime during the mid/late 90's.

The location on Beach Blvd. in La Habra had once been a Fed-Mart.
In the 1980s, the most of the shopping center was demolished to build a new Smith's. This later became Vons.
The only part still original to the 1970s is the Firestone on the northeast corner, facing Beach.
