Wow. I didn't know these still existed. If I ever make a trip to LA, eating there will be a top priority. There was a Pioneer chicken here in Turlock back in the mid 80's. KFC was my favorite restaurant back then, but my grandma liked going to Pioneer chicken(it was near her house). We ate there quite often, and although not KFC, the chicken had a distinctive flavor of its own, and everytime I went to my grandma's, I knew we were going to eat at Pioneer chicken. Great memories.

Then, one day, out of the blue, the restaurant went out of business. I remember how surprised my grandma was that it was no longer there. Had I known Pioneer still existed in other sections of the state, I probably would have taken her to one before she died. I remember how years after it closed, she would still mention how she loved that Pioneer chicken.

Funny how you guys mention how dirty the place was. That must have plagued alot of the locations. I remember my grandma complaining about that, but it sure didn't stop her from wanting to eat there.

I was told that the HQ was in Lake Arrowhead CA...as the owner lived in the vicinity.

The corporate offices were in the back...and a restaurant was in the front.

Currently, the site is called BORDERLINE.

There was a Pioneer Chicken on Gale and Hacienda in Hacienda Heights (Gale Square). It is now Popeye's.

Pioneer disappeared from Sacramento about 25 years ago. I moved to Socal in 1995 and what do I see: Pioneer Chicken. I resisted the temptation to eat at one until 2005. I went to the one in Bell Gardens and discovered that it still tasted the same.

LA Times reports Echo Park location is closed, didn't mention other locations. Are the rest still open?

Ooops! Thanks Jeff...a couple/few of my entries last night...I listed Harbor. When actually it is Beach Boulevard.
Drove by recently...I THINK they finally took the original sign down. Will have to check again. It was always funny how the "new" signage still had the shape of the Pioneer!

Popeye's recently closed.

I guess the Burger King's transformation into KFC across the street did them in!

Apparently Pioneer is slowly going into history.

The Hollywood store was evicted last year, the store off Sunset closed last year and apparently so did the location on Olympic/San Vicente.

I dont know the status of the other two known locations (Bell Gardens and East LA)
