All this talk of new stores may soon be moot. There are multiple news reports today that Mervyn's may file for Chapter 11 in the coming days.

The current parent company of Mervyns also owns Albertsons LLC (Cerberus Capital). Recently, Cerebrus closed or sold almost half of the Albertsons stores (and DC's) they acquired during the 3-way split with Supervalu and CVS. They acquired Mervyns from Target Corporation around 2005, before they entered the grocery business. If Mervyns does file Chapter 11, could this mean the end of retail operations (grocery and non-grocery) for Cerberus and its partners?

Cerberus is the majority shareholder in each of the companies it owns, but they are operated as independant companies. I worked for a subsidiary of Cerberus at one point. No one part can take the whole down.

That being said, I really don't think Mervyns has much life left. Too much has been shuttered for them at this point. Target really should have kept them; they'd have had a longer shelf life.

The 40+ year old BROADWAY is truly getting quite a face-lift.

Site is set to open this fall.
Despite the possible Chapter 11 reports, evidently full speed ahead for the October opening.

Ad in local newspaper The Sun for career fair/hiring day August 1-2 @ the San Bernardino Hilton.

I think Mervyns will survive.

Maybe close those one-off not in mall locations to save money.

(Alhambra Main Street, Anaheim Plaza, Tustin, Puente Hills, Chino, etc).

It's official:
http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5gxaF ... gD927P70O0

They are entering Chapter 11 and they say they will continue operating all 175 stores as they reorganize. Of course that doesn't mean that they won't be closing stores or liquidating entirely. Ch11 buys them some time before they need to make that decision.

Let's hope that they are able to survive Chapter 11.

Puente Hills was built during the TARGET years. TARGET is immediately next door.

Did they do this in many other areas?

yes, in Las Vegas, they built a Target at Decatur and Meadows, with a Mervyns across the street and a mall behind the Mervyn's is on land originally owned by Dayton Hudson. At Stephanie and Sunset there is also a Mervyns across the street from a Target, those two instances may be a coincidence, but at the time they were built, I believe that Mervyns was owned by Target...

At Nellis/Charleston, there is a Mervyns built next to a Target and at the Grand Canyon Parkway Mall at Flamingo/Grand Canyon, there is a Mervyns built next to a Target...

The Chino store on Philadelphia is in a shopping center with Target and a now-closed Sam's Club. There are several smaller stores that separate Target and Mervyns. The Valencia store on Magic Mountain Pkwy is also in a shopping center with Target though they are on the opposite ends of the (very long) block from each other.

The Northridge store on Corbin and Nordhoff is next to a recently-expanded Target but the Target was originally a Gemco.

There was a Mervyn's store built at the same time as the local Target store here in Redmond (around 1995/1996 or so), on the same land, sharing the same parking lot. The Mervyn's here closed down about two years ago when they left Washington, and late last year a Kohl's opened up in its place (apparently tearing out practically everything but the bare walls and building from scratch.)

I have a feeling we'll see a lot more of that exact scenario being played out again very soon. I'm surprised Kohl's didn't buy Mervyn's a few years ago in order to expand into California instead of building their own stores.

Just a subtle reminder here to everyone to please keep the thread focused on history.

A bit of information in today's edition of the San Bernardino Sun.

http://www.sbsun.com/business/ci_10047567

The bankruptcy filing was made on the same date Mervyns opened its first store in San Lorenzo CA 59 years ago.

Founder Mervin Morris states, "That smarts"..."It's ironic."

He goes on to say that the CEOs "lost their focus" and at the same time "devoted all their energy to Target."

Article spelled founder's name Mervin...as Mervyn!
