This is a list of Food Barn locations according to various display ads in the Los Angeles Times between 1980 and the end of 1984.
In January 1985 Food Barn was rebranded as "Safeway Food Barn" and all of the ads and pricing were consolidated.
Interestingly none of these stores are now Vons (except maybe for the stores I couldn't identify.)
The live.local.com links have changed so you may have to click on the red pushpin in Scratch Pad on the right to go to the exact location.
Main and Eighth, Corona--Empty store to the north?

Lankershim and Oxnard, North Hollywood--Drug Emporium. I talked about the progression of the North Hollywood Safeway in a comment in this thread: http://www.groceteria.com/board/viewtopic.php?t=689

Lankershim at Erwin, North Hollywood (replaced the above North Hollywood store in 1984)--Superior Food Warehouse. See above-mentioned thread.
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... d%20States___
Chapman and Brookhurst, Garden Grove--Too many possibilities at this intersection. Interestingly there store next to Savon is still signed as Newberry even though the chain went out of business in 1997.
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... d%20States___
Ramona and Valley, El Monte--I remember going to this store once as a kid and I think it was where the 99 Cent Only store is now.
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... d%20States___
Topanga Canyon and Sherman Way, Canoga Park--Big Lots or Babyland?
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... d%20States___
Adams and Magnolia, Huntington Beach--There are 2 gable stores on the north side of the street and a Drug Emporium on the south side. The Ace Hardware on the NE corner is a former Alpha Beta.
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... d%20States___
Western and Redondo Beach Blvd, Gardena--Maybe where the drug store is on the corner? Other views show it as an empty lot, so it's a new build.
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... d%20States___
Carmenita and Artesia, Cerritos--It's probably the gable store next to Rite Aid. According to another thread, the Asian market is a former Alpha Beta.
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... d%20States___
Central and Philadelphia, Chino
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... d%20States___
Rosecrans and Central, Compton (opened in 1981, closed 1982)--Replaced by Food4Less?
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... d%20States___
York and Ave 58, Highland Park--the famous Marina Big Lots
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... d%20States___
Fourth and Yucapia, Yucapia--Maybe where Walgreens is? I believe the Stater Bros is Store #1 though not in the original building.
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... d%20States___
Lincoln at Rose, Venice--Big Lots with one of the cooler facades out there for both them and Savon (now CVS)
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... d%20States___
Los Angeles Ave at First, Simi Valley--Don't Know
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... d%20States___
757 Workman at Laurel Canyon, San Fernando--Payless Foods
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... d%20States___
Desert Inn Rd at Eastern, Las Vegas--probably the independent Hispanic market. Why this was listed in the LA Times is beyond me.
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... d%20States___
Super Food Barn stores, which started in 1983:
Euclid and Philadelphia, Ontario--Food4Less
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... io%2c%20ca___
Florida and Sanderson, Hemet--Not sure but there are several big box retailers at that intersection.
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... 2c%20Hemet___
Brockton at University, Riverside--don't know
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... d%20States___
Van Buren at Arlington, Riverside--don't know
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... d%20States___
Azusa at San Bernardino Rd, Covina. There was some discussion of this building on this thread: http://www.groceteria.com/board/viewtopic.php?t=793. It looks like a former Lucky based on the shape of the Deli and Bakery signs, but was this a Market Basket, then Smith's Food King, then Lucky? or did they move into that building after Food Barn shut down?

Azusa and San Bernardino in Covina I beleive is the center across the way where there is a Smart And Final. I beleive its the big empty (now DD's discounts) store in live local:

And yes, the 99 cent store is where the Food Barn was. I used to go there as a kid.

Unfortunately they only listed intersections for most of the stores, so "Brookhurst & Chapman" is all we have to go with. Sometimes they would list an intersection because it was a major landmark while the store was really a block or two away.javelin wrote:What building on Brookhurst & Chapman in Garden Grove were you referring to? As of 1984, there was no Food Barn at this location. The large building to the left was a Pavillions, was a Zody's before that. Across the street was an outdoor mall, including a JC Penny and a Best.

I can vouch for the other thread, the asian market was an Alpha Beta until it was folded into Ralphs by Yucaipa. The store next to Rite Aid (nee Thrifty) was indeed a low frills grocery store in the 80's, although I was a kid then and my young mind doesn't remember the name of the store.runchadrun wrote:Carmenita and Artesia, Cerritos--It's probably the gable store next to Rite Aid. After it was a grocery store, in the mid-to-late 80s the store was subdivided and half became Farrs Stationers, a Hallmark store that operated into the late 90s.
At the time, I was more interested in the Thrifty store because it had (and still has) the ice cream counter. Speaking of which, if you're ever in the neighborhood, the Rite Aid sports its Thrifty interior signage - they just pulled the Thrifty name off the walls inside. Most other things haven't changed much since then, no real movement of where products are placed either. The end tenant in that mall is a Little Caesars Pizza, it used to be a Pioneer Chicken.
Two blocks to the south is where the airplanes crashed in 1986.
