Indio Super Saver closing 02/02/06

Post by storewanderer »

Albertsons is closing the Indio Super Saver on 02/02/06. This was the last of the former ASC Super Saver Stores left in SoCal. There is still one left up in Woodland (NorCal).

Indio is the last place in SoCal to have the old Acme-style Super Saver logo. The other ones have a modified ABS version with italic font (the two or three hispanic format ones, although some or all of them may have closed by now).

Apparantly this store in Indio started life as a Pay N Pak (home improvement store chain that was based in NorCal, filed bankruptcy, but is now back or was back operating up in WA under different ownership).

Odd stores those were. ASC first tried this concept in San Diego under the "Lucky Advantage" banner, and was later expanded to the former "Lucky" in Oceanside, CA under the "Price Advantage" banner. Shortly before grand opening, Price Club filed an injunction to stop ASC from using the word "Price" in the name, and the store was opened as "Food Advantage", with the word "Price" inked out every where. Shortly thereafter it was known as "Food Price Advantage" and then was finally rebranded Super Saver. The store was horribly laid out, lacked many things that made that Lucky store a nice place to shop. The store in Oceanside was sold to Stater Bros during the ABS/ASC merger and it retained the "Warehouse" layout for nearly a year before being gutted and transformed into a clone of its former existance. I believe that ORIGINALLY opened as "Food Basket".

The Super Saver in Indio was a Zodys when the building first opened in 1979. Zody closed that store down in the early 80's several years before it closed them all in 1986. I'm sure many different businesses have come and gone before the Super Saver.

This site is now independent CARDENAS.

The former LUCKY to the side of CARDENAS is still sitting vacant.

The Super Saver in Woodland,CA is long gone, it closed in 2004 or 2005. The building is currently occupied by LaSuperior Hispanic Markets.

Woodland closed in summer 2006 with the LLC wave of closures. The store was long overdue for a closure. The current operators did a nice job converting it to a hispanic format store without doing a whole lot inside other than adding some decor and service counters.

I would venture a guess that the only reason the Woodland Store was kept open as long as it was, was to keep the union contract on the books for the Super Savers, which was different than the union contract that the full service grocers have and makes for lower labor costs (wages are lower, position ratios are different, etc.). If all of the stores covered under a given contract close (since Woodland was the last one), then the contract in essense dies off. Basically by keeping that one store going and the contract alive it enabled them to quickly open up more discount format stores should they opt to do it. This is why we haven't seen Pak N Save disappear completely, too.
