Re: 1959 Chain Store Age piece on Marina Safeway
The San Francisco Chronicle's "Wayback Machine" of November 30, 2008 had an item from December 5, 1958 about the San Francisco Planning Commission's unanimous approval of "[t]he hotly disputed plans for a Safeway supermarket at Gashouse Cove (now the Marina)." Apparently the "Marina Safeway" was informally known as the "Gashouse Cove" Safeway during the approval process. I assume that the "Gashouse" was the large, tall structure that once loomed over the area.
