The one oddity on this list is the only Vons, a small store at 3780 Mission Blvd. that is listed as being a Piggly Wiggly pre 1954.

Vons' first full-sized supermarket in San Diego opened in the 1950's on Mission Blvd. in Oceanside (I don't know the exact year) but the street address is not the same. It's currently a Walmart Neighborhood market.

I wonder if they really operated this one very small store on the MB strand before building any large supermarkets in the area?

The Linda Vista Plaza/Linda Vista Road supermarkets in San Diego's Linda Vista neighborhood have especially interesting histories.

The Linda Vista neighborhood was built very quickly just before and during World War II under federal government contracts as defense housing. See: https://lindavista.org/history/ The neighborhood summarizes its genesis as "3000 houses in 300 days."

The "Historical Linda Vista Walking Tour" brochure says that the Linda Vista Safeway store opened on February 2, 1943. In the fall of 1943, the remainder of the shopping plaza opened. First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt dedicated it. The brochure says that the shopping plaza was completely rebuilt in 1972. It apparently was one of the first planned shopping centers in the United States. The nearby Tenant Activity Building still stands today. The brochure says it it was dedicated on December 26, 1943. The brochure says that it was sold to private ownership in 1953 and reopened as a supermarket, "a series of which included Roy's, Alpha Beta, and Hometown Markets between 1953 and 1973." From 1975 to present, the former Tenant Activity Building has been used as a "Skateworld" roller skating rink. See:

Interesting post. I didn't know about Linda Vista's past. I enjoyed reading it.
