Mayfair Locations-San Diego-1959

Post by Jason B. »

The Thursday, November 12, 1959 edition of the San Diego Union contains many advertisements for supermarkets and grocery stores in the San Diego area. I will post information from each one separately.

Mayfair ran a two-page ad. Pork was the main special, "spareribs or smoked picnics," "your choice for only" 29 cents per pound. They also touted that they gave S&H Green Stamps. A slogan in the ad was “GROWING WITH SAN DIEGO.”

These were the Mayfair locations listed in the ad:
(1) "newest" at 58th & University, San Diego
(2) 1260 Garnet St, Pacific Beach
(3) 160 N. Magnolia Ave., El Cajon
(4) 3967 30th St, North Park
(5) 5075 Federal Blvd., San Diego
(6) 1000 E. 10th St., National City
(7) 7663 Broadway, Lemon Grove
(8) 540 Third Ave., Chula Vista
(9) 500 Broadway, Chula Vista
(10) 1186 E Main, El Cajon
(11) 3363 El Cajon Blvd, San Diego
(12) 4340 Moraga, Clair(e)mont

Are any of these Mayfair store buildings still in use today?

This one is still a super market and looks very similar to what it looked like as a Mayfair.

58th & University, San Diego: Now a Marshall's.

1260 Garnet St, Pacific Beach: Now a Henry's Marketplace.

160 N. Magnolia Ave., El Cajon: Now an Albertsons-Sav•on. This however, was a complete rebuild.

3967 30th St, North Park: Gone, now a bunch of "Urban Renewal" shops.

5075 Federal Blvd., San Diego: Now a Foodland, and yes, it looks original.

1000 E. 10th St., National City: Gone, looks like an office complex now.

7663 Broadway, Lemon Grove: Jo-Ann Fabrics.

540 Third Ave., Chula Vista: Gone, Now the site of the Third District Court and Jail.

500 Broadway, Chula Vista: Literally a couple streets from the Third Ave. location, I'm taking a stab and placing it as the building behind the Carl's Jr. but I can't make out what it is now.

1186 E Main, El Cajon: U-Haul center.

3363 El Cajon Blvd, San Diego: Centre Laundry. Still has the sign pylon.

4340 Moraga, Clairemont: Gone, looks like apartments now.

I found an October 1964 ad and they had grown to 24 San Diego stores by this time (Some of the stores above had closed):
(13) 3560 Ashford, San Diego south of Clairemont Mesa (now a Carnival Latino market)
(14) 3811 Sixth Ave. San Diego in Hillcrest (This must have been a very short lived location. The address points to an AT&T facility. I assume they bought out an independent and built the store at 535 Robinson which was just a block away a year or two later. That was by far their highest volume store in San Diego when they exited the market and is now a RiteAid).
(15) 7525 Eads Ave. La Jolla (now a RiteAid)
(16) 801 Palm Avenue, Imperial Beach (Google maps shows a dirt lot now)
(17) 33 Naples Street Chula Vista (Google maps shows this as a residential neighborhood.)
(18) 9665 Campo Road, Spring Valley (This is now a CVS and there is a newer Albertson's in the same center)
(19) 6145 Lake Murray Boulevard, La Mesa (Now a Big Lots)
(20) 12580 Lakeshore Drive, Lakeside (Now an independent called Garden Farms Market)
(21) 9365 Mission Gorge Road, Santee (There is now a Sprouts at 9361 Mission Gorge Rd which was probably built on the same site. The shopping center layout looks very typical for a Mayfair of that era).
(22) 140 South Sierra Avenue, Solana Beach (there is a parking lot there but no exact address match)
(23) 505 Vulcan Ave, Encinitas (now Encinitas City Hall)
(24) 2800 Roosevelt Carlsbad (now occupied by Advanced Biologics)
(25) 1182 South Hill Oceanside (address no longer exists)
(26) 1345 Valley Blvd, Escondido (address no longer exists)
(27) 810 Escondido Ave. Vista (The street was later renamed Vista Way and I couldn't find an exact match)
(28) 640 So. Main Street Fallbrook (Now Joe's Hardware)
