Pleasanton, Calif.-Grocery Stores

Post by Jason B. »

Pleasanton, Calif. is perhaps best known as the headquarters of supermarket chain Safeway, Inc. It currently has eight grocery stores:

(1) Lucky - 1 location (that was a "Lucky," then an "Albertson's," then a "Lucky" once again)
(2) Safeway - 1 location (opened Dec. 1996, replacing earlier building in the same shopping center)
(3) Raley's - 1 location (opened c. 1988). This store is said to be undergoing a major re-model.
(4) Nob Hill - 1 location (opened before Nob Hill merged into Raley's, but was not "re-branded" as a Raley's). (Pleasanton likely is the only community that has both a Raley's and a Nob Hill.)
(5) Trader Joe's - 1 location (one of the earliest stores in this chain in the Bay Area)
(6) Cole's - independent grocer with a distinctive 1950s'/60s "football" logo
(7) Gene's Fine Foods - independent grocer in a former Alpha Beta building
(8) Smart & Final - opened August 13, 2008 in a former Comp USA building. See http://www.pleasantonweekly.com/story.php?story_id=4363

Two more grocery stores likely will open in Pleasanton in the near future:
(9) Fresh & Easy (by British supermarket chain Tesco) will open in late 2008 in the Express Fitness site in the Rose Pavilion center on Santa Rita Road. It will be approximately 16,000 square feet. http://www.ci.pleasanton.ca.us/pdf/pc-080709-5cSR.pdf
(10) Safeway likely will construct a 65,000-square foot "Lifestyle" store at Bernal and Valley across from the Alameda County Fairgrounds. This Safeway location will be one to watch because it likely will be observed very closely by the staff at the nearby Safeway headquarters.

Pleasanton, Calif. is the headquarters of Safeway, Inc. It will have a second Safeway store by late 2011, approved in August 2010 by the Pleasanton Planning Commission. It will be a 58,000 square-foot "Lifestyle" Safeway, located at Valley and Bernal near Interstate 680. Safeway will have the right to expand by 10,000 square feet in the future, according to the Pleasanton Weekly newspaper. A gasoline dispensing operation was originally planned, but apparently will not be included in the final plan. See:

Livermore, San Ramon, Alameda and Novato have similar Safeway "Lifestyle" stores, the article says.

The Pleasanton Nob Hill Foods store on Santa Rita Road closed a few months ago. It likely opened in the mid- or late-1980s.
