Vons stores with old interiors

Just wondering how many Vons stores still have the "red and white" interior, or if there are other markets in former Vons locations that are using this interior.

The only Vons I know of that had this interior recently was in North Fresno at First and Nees. This store opened in the late 80's and before I left the area in June of last year this store had the "red and white" interior and the "Vons Value Center" signage on the front of the store. No idea if it's been remodeled in the past year, but it's still listed on their store locator.

Downey's Vons last time I went (about 5 months ago) still had the Value interior package. Its a very old store though I know.

What I often find funny is when VONS/Safeway LIFESTYLES a site...many times they remodel the entire store...yet, leave the OLD freezer cases!

They go to all the cost/effort to remodel the entire store...and leave the outdated/high energy-consuming suckers!

Vons Montebello gutted the entire store and put in all new cases.

Yes quite a few Vons stores still have the old interiors, here in Simi Valley the huge Vons on Cochran and Erringer (former GEMCO) still has the original interior from '93. On the other hand, what's odd is that the Vons in Ojai got the new lifestyle trim but still has older lighting. This was a former Safeway which opened in '60.

They haven't replaced much, if any, lighting in the last two lifestyles they've done here in Nevada.

They have, however, started to install self checkouts which requires significant rewiring and other related work.

There are apparantly a few different "levels" of lifestyle remodel they do. Some are done better than others, and I have yet to see the rhyme or reason to this.

I've seen a 2003 store (which looked as good as new prior to being remodeled) that got worked over far more than a 2000 store.

I visited the Metropole store on Avalon, Catalina Island 4 or 5 years ago, when most mainland stores were being renovated to the Safeway "Giving Our Best" decor. Metropole (Avalon's only and largest chain-owned supermarket) still had the red-white decor. I don't know if they have since renovated to either "Giving Our Best" or "Lifestyle" decors.

For those not familiar with this somewhat unusual store:

- refrigerated meat case, single aisle produce, small deli departments
- 6 narrow limited assortment grocery aisles
- 3-4 narrow checkout lanes
- some small refrigerators for cold groceries

The very small Vons Express closed about 3-4 years ago as part of an agreement with the City of Avalon and antitrust lawyers. Its interior was completely different and its offerings were 7-11-ish.

Metropole Vons is similar in size to the Stater Bros' Staters Express California Speedway store
mentioned in a previous post.

There's a Vons in Santa Maria with the 80s decor i think it is pretty close to the Santa Maria Towne Centre.

The Vons store in Canyon Country (Soledad Canyon and Sand Canyon Rd) still has the old red and white interior. Word around town has it that the company is trying to buy up the land that is currently a drying up mobile home park across the street, and to build a new Pavilions on that lot. I would assume that is why they have not remodeled the interiors of the current store.

The Santa Maria sites are primarily former Williams Brothers sites. Vons probably remodeled when they acquired the chain...and haven't done anything since!

The Vons I went to in Santa Maria had the old late 90s Safeway style interior on the walls, but everything else was older.

The store was doing very little business relative to the Albertsons and FoodsCo on the same street.

The Vons "Value" interior is now gone from the Vons in Coronado, CA (a former gable Safeway). I've got an ongoing photoset documenting the remodel... which has produced some endcap signs with the "VONS Giving our best" slogan from the early 2000's...

La Canada Flintridge Vons (red-white) is another SoCal store that retained the old interior. All other stores that I've been to in the San Gabriel Valley have the Lifestyle package.
