Former Alpha Beta: 500 Blk West Marshall Bl, San Bernardino

Post by Jeff »

I walked into this market yesterday for my friend's party. Today its a Mexican Meat market by the name of La Famosa.

But inside its a trip back in time. Alpha Beta later era signage still on the wall for "Quality Meats" and one for "Beverages". They have the original drop down lights in the produce area. The market only uses 1/2 the original floorspace, so behind the "wall" of shelving they have more original shelving and some other stuff . A lot of label scars were painted over though. Anyone know when this market closed?

Definitely a site to see, even has the original floorings.

Killing me Jeff!

I sincerely have been meaning to drive by this site recently...to see the latest with this former Alpha-Beta.

It became Ralphs with Ralphs' acquistion of Alpha-Beta...and was Ralphs just up until a few years ago.

It became a full-service independent for a short period. Believe it was vacant for a bit...just prior to the latest.

It is exactly the same store as those discussed on Workman Mill/La Puente/Whittier thread:

Swung by the site yesterday.

541 Marshall, @ "E" Street

Lots of label scars on the front of the building! Really enjoyed the stone facade on the side of the building (facing the residential area).

The shopping carts are quite a riot. A hodge podge of carts that they must've collected around town! Included: Sears, Petco, OfficeMax, Office Depot, True Value, Ralphs, & Albertons. Even a MEIJER cart...quite a long way from that area! My favorite=STOR. How long ago did IKEA acquire STOR!

You can definitely see the Alpha-Beta labelscar there.

And STOR I think was sold to Ikea around 1990 I want to say.

Until I get a new Cellphone, interior pics are out of my game (sorry Chad).

Next time I go to my friends house (they live off D St), I'll get some exterior pics.

I've always taken my interiors with a regular camera and have had no problems. I just take the picture real quick and put the camera back in my pocket. However, this isn't always possible if the store is super busy.

As Jeff says...it is slow in there.

So slow, that I noticed a step ladder in the general merchandise area. I took it upon myself to get a REALLY good view of the area that is not being used. Got on the ladder a couple times! It is a mixture of fixtures not being used, merchandise and junk.

The Mexican music is playing REALLY loud inside the store!

Sign says La Famosa # 4
I GOOGLED La Famosa, and looks as tho the other sites are Hemet, Moreno Valley and Sacramento (?). Another La Famosa in Ohio...doubt related.

Help me out...2yrs H.S. Spanish MANY years ago. La Famosa...guessing means FAMOUS?

¡Sí! "La Famosa" se traduce por "The Famous" en Inglés.

Oh, sorry... yes. You're correct. it translates to "The Famous"

Dean, don't you love the hanging lights in the old produce area, and the reused Alpha-Beta era produce fixtures in the "dairy" area of the new store. And got to love the old Alpha Beta era Beverages and Quality Meats.

That weird dark painted area in the front corner that is not in use, was that a Bakery area?
