Any interesting stores in or within a reasonable distance (~ 2 hours) of Denver?

Particularly interested in old Safeways, old unremodeled Buttreys I could visit by crossing into WY, or older King /City Market units.

Judging by a satellite view of the Safeway at 4860 Pecos st., I think it's from the 1950s.

In the "Timing is Everything" department, I happened to take this very picture of the Pecos Safeway about two hours ago.

I didn't go in, so I can't report on the interior.

On a side note, I was also in the Idaho Springs Safeway today, which is an older store with a modern front and interior. The interesting thing about this store is that it was apparently once part Safeway and part drugstore. Safeway took over the drugstore part but due to its floor being higher than the grocery, they cut in an entrance on the side and you have to go up a ramp to get to that level. That part of the store is stocked with most of the stuff you'd find in a drugstore. Drugs, health and beauty items, magazines, some misc stuff like patio furniture. It does not have its own entrance or checkers. You have to go back to the regular checkouts.

Maybe an old attached Super S? Who knows...

Apparently the above Safeway is locked out of updating due to some zoning/property restriction....it is strange that the "S"s havent been updated.

Zoning/property restrictions that prevent updating? Too bad there aren't more of those. Kudos to Cheyenne, WY.

Tragically, the interior of that Cheyenne Safeway is modern. But I love that it's still around. Shopped there a number of times, but usually am there in the evening when the sun is in the wrong direction for pics...

I DID go into the Pecos store the day after taking the pic. It's a parts bin interior. It has the 80's grey interior shown on the main 1980's Safeway page of this site, but with older department signage letters (the sort of italic ones) painted to...uh...fit in more? Plus they had images of food next to them. The aisle directory signs are the ones from the 90's buttery yellow interior.

I'd link the Groceteria images into this post for examples, but I wasn't sure if David would hit me or not.

The "OUT" sign on the door was probably as old as the store itself.

(EDIT: Apparently it was a regular interior at some point. It's the same interior as the Chestnut/Antoinette South San Francisco store as shown on TheStranger's page).

Oh...Here's that Idaho Springs store I mentioned...

The section (the whole big section with the windows) just left of the liquor store arch is the Safeway drug, health and beauty section.

Naah. I only get violent when people try to link to my pictures from OUTSIDE my site. And not really even then, because I have a script that usually keeps them from being able to :)

The interior in Cheyenne wasn't completely modern though. They had old brown checkstands (with new looking lights from the pre-lifestyle decor). One turntable, the rest cashier unload style. The floor also looks to be from maybe the 70's. It certainly isn't the original, but isn't what I'd call modern either. Some dark colored tiles around the frozen and meat areas. I recall other floor variations as well.

The perishable areas in that store were unusually lightly stocked. Also every employee I saw seemed to have some sort of title. I'm thinking this is a low volume operation.

Here's a closer image of that Cheyenne store (courtesy of my new scanner).

Here's another Cheyenne store that closed in the past few years. It was south of I-80 on S Greeley Hwy, and was replaced by a big new store a couple of blocks south. This was the smallest Safeway I've ever been in.

Just working from memory and Google Maps, (I haven't been there in probably ten years), it's the building where Steele St and E 1st Ave intersect. In fact, I believe that's the intersection I took the picture at.
