classic Safeway sign in Spokane

I found this on Windows Live Local. It was the Safeway in Spokane's Hillyard neighborhood. It had a clasic sign, which was still standing when these aerials were taken.
I believe that the building south of the sign was the original store. It is similar in design to the recently closed Spokane 3rd & Maple Safeway. When I lived in Spokane in the mid '90's Safeway was located in the building north of the sign. I see it is now a dollar store.

Any idea why they closed the 3rd and Maple store? That was my main grocery stop when I lived there in the late nineties.

I came across this sign while in Spokane last summer along with the store, though it was dark and I couldn't see too well.

They relocated the store down the block from this old store, I think two or three blocks south, but don't quote me.
