History of Safeway in Portland, OR Since 1921

Post by StoreLiker2006 »

Hi,

I would love to see a detailed history of Safeway in and around Portland, OR and Vancouver, WA from 1921 to the present. You know, I want to see a history section on Safeway in the Pacific NW area as detailed as David Gwynn's history of Safeway in San Francisco, CA.

In other words -- I would like to be a contributor to the Groceteria community.

By that I am talking about what the oldest and newest Safeway stores in Portland and Vancouver were back in 1960, 1970, 1980, et al.

Example: Safeway store list in the Portland/Vancouver region
(as of September 1, 1980)
1. 10554 SE Main St, Milwaukie, OR 97222 (opened 5/3/51, reopened 1967, closed 12/1996)
2. 5420 SE 82nd Ave, Portland, OR 97266 (opened 8/18/69, closed 5/2005)
3. 1100 NE Broadway, Portland, OR 97232 (opened 8/1/60, reopened 1999)
4. 11945 SW Pacific Hwy, Tigard, OR 97223 (opened 1961, closed circa 1988)
5. 95 82nd Dr, Gladstone, OR 97027 (opened 12/15/76)
6. 3527 SE 122nd Ave, Portland, OR 97236 (opened 10/19/77)
7. 3940 SE Powell Blvd, Portland, OR 97202 (opened 1941, reopened 1974 and 2001)
8. 12321 NE Halsey St, Portland, OR 97230 (opened 5/66, closed 12/95)
9. 4315 SE Woodstock Blvd, Portland, OR 97206 (opened 7/10/67, closed 1996)
10. 101 SE 82nd Ave, Portland, OR 97216 (opened 10/27/67)
11. 401 "A" Ave, Lake Oswego, OR 97034 (opened 2/1/65)
12. 1455 NE Division St, Gresham, OR 97030 (opened 1974)
13. 11920 NE Union Ave (Martin L. King Blvd), Portland, OR 97217 (opened 3/62, closed 12/89)
14. 18565 SW Beaverton-Hillsdale Hwy, Aloha, OR 97006 (opened 1960s, closed 2000)
15. 10280 SW Park Way, Beaverton, OR 97005 (opened 1954, closed 1997)
16. 13485 NW Cornell Rd, Portland, OR 97229 (opened 1967)
17. 5920 NE Union Ave (Martin L. King Blvd), Portland, OR 97211 (opened 3/65, reopened 1989 and 2000)
18. 2800 SE Hawthorne Blvd, Portland, OR 97214 (opened 7/15/63)
19. 16100 SE Stark St, Portland, OR 97233 (opened 2/27/61, closed 7/85)
20. 8002 N Burlington Ave, Portland, OR 97203 (opened 3/64, closed 6/2004)
21. 6400 N Interstate Ave, Portland, OR 97217 (opened 5/51, closed 1989)

I cannot list them all right now, but I do know that the number of stores Safeway operated in the Portland/Vancouver area when 1981 began exceeds that of their count in San Francisco, CA from the same period. Most of the Portland/Vancouver area stores date from the 1960s, and the oldest known store still in operation in 1980 was the 39th & Powell location (which opened in 1941 and was reconstructed in 1973).

Ben (and other interested parties):

I'd love to add a Portland area feature, so contributions are most welcome. A comprehensive Safeway list would be a great start. And if anyone came up with info on other chains, that would be great too. It's an area I'd love to reseach on my own if time and geography permitted.

Thanks,
David

Dave,

Some other chains in the Portland area I'd like to assist you with are:

Thriftway (the United Grocers affiliate)
Tradewell
Fred Meyer (under Kroger ownership since 1997)
Kienow's (another United Grocers affiliate, 1908-2000)
Sentry (the United Grocers affiliate, not the hardware chain)
Albertson's (Idaho-based, but still lies in the Pacific NW)
Food 4 Less
