That wasn't entirely uncommon among the early supermarkets on the East Coast. Often, the owners leased out non-food concession space as an extra source of income. The first Big Bear stores in New Jersey did this too; the first store was 50,000 square feet, but only 15,000 square feet were given over to food, which was till a pretty huge area by the standards of the day.
