The current Albertsons logo has had some variations as well. For many years the sign was a backlit fluorescent rectangular sign. It somewhat resembled the early 80s Safeway signs. Albertsons started using individual neon letters in the early 80s (covered by blue). The Boise store at 16th & State may have been the first one. There is a variation of that also, the early ones were solid blue, later versions have a white outline on the letters. More recent signs have the big A logo with the Albertsons script below it. One thing I find interesting is how Albertsons used a different type of script in the early 2000's on their private label products, and also used that same one on the wall inside the entrance to some of their stores, but never used it on their outside signage.

As for Boise, I believe the long-gone Franklin store was the last to use the "western" letters. The Broadway store had these on the building until its major 1980s remodel, but Franklin retained them until it was closed a year or two later.

You must be thinking of the former University Place store at 8319 27th St. W, which was also built in 1957. In its later years as a supermarket, it was a Thriftway, a Red Apple, and finally died as a close-out place called Grocery Savers. I think there's a karate school in there now.

In addition the U.P. and Lakewood stores, there was one in Tacoma proper built in 1957 at 7030 Pacific Ave. That building has been remodeled pretty well beyond recognition.

Could all of you guys by any chance please re-upload all of the photos (the Visalia, California store to name but one) you have of any of the pre-1976 Albertsons stores with the old-style mid-'60s signage wherein the Albertsons name is spelled out letter by letter (in the white on blue scheme that was also used for the 1976 logo)?

Also, the one Albertsons I remember on Milwaukie (on Harrison Street & 34th Ave.), for which its location has since been home to a police station, was false-fronted sometime after 1976, although the store's original road sign was untouched for the life of the store. Albertsons left this area in 1989 to become one of the tenants at the then-new Milwaukie Marketplace Center.

I remember seeing at least one other pre-'76 Albertsons circa 1987 with the original '60s-style signage on the front of the store (referring to the stores on 4715 SE 39th Ave. and possibly 2323 SE 82nd Ave. to name but two).

Thank you,

[quote="Super S"] It somewhat resembled the early 80s Safeway signs.

You mean like this?: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Safew ... design.jpg

To update my post from earlier in the thread about the old Albertsons in downtown Bellevue, while searching through some newspapers I found out that this particular store originally opened in October of 1959. I also came across a number of interior photos of the store from that time of varying quality in the papers, and once I have them sorted out I may post some of them here. Apparently at approximately 23,000 square feet this was the largest Albertsons store in existance back when it opened. It's also interesting to note that in 1959, even though the store had the "western font" on its storefront, the newspaper ads still used an older logo until several years later.

Edit: Corrected the size upon looking at the article again. It's 23,000, not 27,000.

I finally got around to compiling and posting the stuff I found on the former Downtown Bellevue Albertsons store into a Blog post. It can be found here:

Here's an old Polaroid I picked up in a group of photographs. It may have been taken in Tacoma, Washington...

Hi,I thinkI can help you out on the smoke stack! In the years before air pollution awareness. Supermarkets built incinerators to handle wooden produce crates, garbage, cardboard and what have you as a way of eliminating ,outdoor trash and cardboard rooms. It also was a way to save money and cut costs.
Many of these stores caugth fire when busy clerks piled crates near the the door of in incinerator and simply forgot toclose the iron gates. This happened in the 70!s to the Kings Supermarket in Creskill New Jersey one Christmas Eve.
The store and the strip center were gone in twenty minutes. It was amazing as busy as that store was that no one got hurt.
After that ,incinerators simply disapeared over nigth in New Jersey and Metro N.Y. Compactors and Bailors began to appear .

I don't believe that picture is of any of the three stores that were in Tacoma (Lakewood, University Place, or 72nd and Pacific) during that era. They all had flat roofs and none of them had railroad crossings behind the store.
