Yesterday I stopped by to get gas at Harlem & Higgins across from a Pet Smart store witch recently closed. well I just found out it was an A&P store because there was some marking on the plaque that the old Pet Supply witch showed what it used to be. I wasn't around when that location operateed as an A&P the only other thing that was there before PS was a Saxon but I kind of figured the building was constructed as a Grocery Store.

There was a National In Norridge on the NE corner of Lawrence & Cumberland witch is an ACE Harware Store. This was also before my time I only know because I once was a at Library there witch serrves both Norridge and Harwood Hieghts and it mentioned a National there. What also interesting if you were to drive east on Lawerence to somewhere near Canfield there's a building witch looks like 1 of those colonial A&P stores. I don't know what's there now and in my time the SE corner of L&C had a A&P witch was probably the same 1 that occupied this other building I mentioned. I know it's all confusing and I've only been around 33 years.

The Pet Smart / Saxon on Harlem & Higgins was indeed an A&P store, as was the building on Lawrence that you're referring to. You might also be interested to know the first National that I remember was on the southwest corner of Harlem & Foster where the Mobil gas station is now, and there was a (National-owned) Del Farm on Higgins & Nagle, where the CVS is now (the big CVS sign on the corner is a remnant from the Del Farm days. In the shopping center on the northwest corner of Harlem & Foster, what is now the Jewel-Osco used to be a Jewel on the south half and a Turnstyle Family Center (discount store) in what is now the Osco side and the Burlington Coat Factory. Turnstyle was owned by Jewel. Also in that shopping center, what is now the just closed Caesarland was originally a High-Low food store, which then became Courtesy Foods and one or two other independent grocers before finally becoming Caesarland. Not sure if this is interesting to anyone outside this neighborhood without any pictures, but thought I would throw my two cents in.

It certainly is interesting. I shop at that Burlington Coat factory a lot and up until recently the shopping center still retained its late 60s look. Too bad the facade is being redone into blech modern. Should have taken pictures a long time ago.

Harlem-Foster always had issues with competing stores in the same shopping center. Jewel was there along with another local grocery store throughout the 60's and 70's (I remember it as Gerard's Foods). Osco was put in there and Walgreen's was on the other side of the shopping center (Osco couldn't have a pharmacy in there for the 1st 2 years because of how Walgreen's lease was written). Ceaserland (and before that it was a Chuck E. Cheese) was next to an arcade called Just Games and was like that for about 10 years.

Also, the newer A&P stores that I remember from the late 70's/early 80's were at Lawrence and Cumberland (S/E Corner) and a Lawrence and Nagle (now a Butera).

I grew up a few blocks from the Del Farm turned CVS. As long as I can remember (i.e. from 1967 forward) the big sign on the corner of Higgins and Nagle was, in fact, not the old Del farm sign. It was the sign for the Snack Time restaurant, which was at the opposite end of the parking lot at Foster and Nagle. After Del Farm closed, the building was occupied by the Golden Flame restaurant and banquet hall for several years. Long after I moved away the former Del Farm/Golden Flame became a CVS.
