Where was this chain and what was it like? I ask because of this ad, so it must have been an American Stores division: http://www.flickr.com/photos/42444189@N04/5057463451/

Hi, I hit the link that you left and it gives us a view of a coffee ad for Acme Products, but nothing on NuWAy. I seem to have heard of this chain in the past, but I simply can!t place it.
I don!t think it was part of American Stores, but I could be wrong.

And to think Acme had 3 brands of coffee (Asco, Ideal, Wincrest) back in the late 1950's.

Hi, I see now and I have heard of Nuway, but I still can!t place it. As far as Acme having three private label Coffee blends that wasn!t unusal for the time. Finast carried five and Safeway had at least that many.

Hi! I believe NuWay was the name of the chain that Acme purchased in Buffalo, that became Acmes Division in the early 60!s.
Hope It Helps

I would say that Gerry is correct.

Here is a link to a photo of a Nu-Way Supermarket taken during the Grand Opening of the Thruway Plaza in Cheektowaga (suburban Buffalo), NY in 1952. http://wnyheritagepress.org/photos_week ... _plaza.htm

The store looks quite similar to Acme Markets stores of the 1940's to 1950's.

Also, note the roster of tenants in the plaza at the time - the Grand Opening of the Thruway Plaza is was a big event at the time.

The was an additional Nu-Way at Bailey Ave. & Genesee Street in Buffalo, NY that served as an Acme Warehouse, Acme Supermarket, and a S&H Green Stamp Redemption Center. http://www.mapquest.com/maps?city=Buffa ... TERSECTION

There were probably additional Nu-Way stores in and around Buffalo, but these are two of the stores that I know my parents shopped at. By the time i was old enough to recognize store names, the stores had long been converted to Acme Markets.

Most, if not all of the Western New York Acme Markets were closed by 1979.
