Grand Union Locations Near West Point

Post by Transit Road »

North of Stoney Point not another store existed until you were above the Bear Mountain Bridge in West Point About ten Miles away, also a small Grand Union.
Most of the area around the US Military at West Point is within the boundaries of New York State's Bear Mountain State Park and Harriman State Park.

Hmmmm.......Grand Unions were in:

- Highland Falls, NY (the town is just outside the gates of the US Military Academy at West Point) on US Route 9W. Southern Side of USMA. Now a Key Food

- Highland Mills, NY - Located on the West side of the USMA. The Grand Union was less than 10,000 square feet and looked almost exactly like the Grand Union in Glens Falls, NY pictured here: http://pleasantfamilyshopping.blogspot. ... vator.html The only differences were: 1) Since the store was only 6-10 feet off NY Route 32, the entrance door was on the side where the Grand Union 'Stop Sign" is located in the picture. 2) The neon Grand Union signage was similar to the signage on the Corporate Headquarters shown in the 1966 photo. The store closed in 1978 or 1979 and was converted into the Highland Mills, NY (10930) Post Office. Very little renovation has been done to the original structure - the only real change is the light blue paint on the original white stucco exterior.

- Cornwall, NY - Quaker Road. Was a busy 30,000 Square foot store. Now a Key Food

- Monroe, NY - Lake St. at Millpond Parkway, This store is shown is the "Food-O-Mat" photo. This store also was later home to Ross Lumber ACE Hardware (closed 2003 - due to competition from the newer Home Depot and Wal-Mart constructed at the Junction of NY-17, US-6, NY-32 and I-87). This Grand Union was relocated to a newer unit in the mid-1970's to a plaza on NY-17M with a former Grant's (later a small 40,000 sq ft K-Mart) and then later the 1970's Grand Union was replaced by a larger Grand Union on the other side of the plaza (now a Super Stop & Shop)

I was speaking of Highland Falls out side of the gates of West Point of course! As you know the only market on the grounds of West Point is the commisary! Frankly I simply could not remember the name of the town to save my life! Funny , I can picture the town the store and even some of the people I used to call on that worked in the store!
As to the Grand Union in High Land Mills that store was located on Route Seventeen M and was south of Middletown about thirty miles west of Highland Falls. Monroe is South of Highland Mills and Cornwall Ny is about 40 miles North Of West Point.

You also forgot the Grand Unions in Washingtonville, Greenwoodlake,Newburgh, Goshen,Warwick and Vailsgate. Any Others I left out? Its been about twenty five years since I said good bye to County Club Heights in Maybrook Ny.

No, the Highland Mills Grand Union was on NY 32 in Highland Mills - in this photo of the Woodbury Historical Society, located on NY 32 next door to the old Grand Union, you can see the wall of the still standing store on the right side of the picture. http://woodburyhistoricalsociety.com/

Please note the original name of the Historical Society's building "The Rushmore Memorial Library". As in, Mount Rushmore.

More information on Highland Mills, NY:

Thirty miles west of Highland Falls would put you in either Chester, NY or Goshen, NY. Both communities had Grand Union locations within their borders, but as far as I know, neither location had a variation of Highland Mills in their location name or plaza location names.

Monroe, NY http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monroe,_NY roughly SSW of Highland Mills. Monroe and Woodbury share a School district - Monroe-Woodbury Central Schools. (Transit Road is a M-W H.S. Grad) Monroe, NY is the birthplace of "Velveeta" cheese. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Velveeta

Cornwall, NY is 5 miles North of West Point, though.

Maybe because I simply hated the ride from West Point to HighLand Mills it simply felt like thirty miles and yes I knew that the GU in Highland Mills is the post Office .My Aunt lived in town and is buried there. I also knew of the many G.U.s that were in Monroe and am sorry to hear about the closing of the hardware store I was in it many times.
As far as the G.U. in Cornwall I must have confused it with another town in the next county, funny I can!t recal any thing about Cornwall! I lookedit up on the web and still cant place it! Perhaps I have confused it with Vailsgate. A real Senior moment a few yaers to early!
I do know that in the Places they we have lived I enjoyed Orange County the most and was always treated well when calling on the G.U.s. Thanks for bringing back some great memories

Gerry,

There was a Big V Shop-Rite Supermarket on NY Rt 32 in Vails Gate, NY that looked exactly like the Metro Supermarket in Toronto, Ontario shown in this link: http://www.groceteria.com/2009/08/18/me ... d-toronto/

Image

Since the Metro was originally constructed as a Grand Union, is it possible that the original Vails Gate Shop-Rite was a former arched Grand Union location?

The current Shop-Rite, at the end of same plaza, replaced the arched building.

Thanks,

Hi, Maybe,But as memory serves BigV ShopRite built many stores with this design all over orange County. When I lived in maybrook this shopping center in Vailsgate had a Caldors and aBaskin Robbins in it aswell as the barrel roofed Shop Rite.
I still think that I confused Cornwall with Vails Gate. I believe the G.U.in Cornwall was adjacent to a Fays Drug Store and was only about a mile or so down the road from a Foodtown that was a former A&P.
Thanks Again!!
